SE door panel carpet removal
« on: April 16, 2007 - 09:31:33 PM »
I wanted to remove my door panel for the first time. Took out the 1/2 dozen phillips screws on the sides, but then it looks like there are more screws to remove behind the carpet.
The carpet seems to be held in with some staple thingies.

Before I screw it up...is the carpet supposed to come off/on? Is it necessary for panel removal?

The carpet does come off, but you don't need to take it off to remove the door panel. The carpet is held on by tabs that are bent over. It sounds like the clips at the bottom of your panel have you stumped. There is a V-like shaped tool(Year One) you can slide up there to pop them out, but I guess you could use a big flat screwdriver in a pinch.

thanks MEK. It's just that I could see more phillips heads under the carpet so I thought those would have to be unscrewed.....

The factory did not put screws under the carpet.  That does not mean someone did not add them afterward.  If they are there they will need to come out.  The carpet was put on the panel with it off the car.  I don't see how the carpet clips could be installed after the door panel was mounted.  Is the carpet glued on?

   :screwy:

The only thing screwed on to my carpet might be the reflector, but I really don't remember. Like I said before, the carpeting had some tabs on the back that were bent over once the tabs were inserted thru the door panel. You wouldn't have a pic, would you?

You could bend the clips after the panel was installed.  It would be a backward way of doing it. You could not screw the panel down behind the carpet afterward.  The clearance wouldn't be there. A screw could but put through the carpet.  :screwy: The reflector is held onto the carpet cardboard backing with clips.   My guess is that the panel clips are holding tight to the door and there aren't any screws holding the panel down behind the carpet.  The only way I can see the possibility of screws being there would be if the carpet was glued onto the panel after the panel was installed.

this shows you the rate of progress around my house...
turns out the botom door panel prongs that go in the door holes are on square backing plates.
These square backing plates were originally pressed in to the door panel with little sharp short "pin" thingies.
This less than durable (read crappy) design may have lasted through one or two panel removal/replacements before seperating from the door panel..
A previous owner was holding them on with duct tape reinforced with small screws.
Actually worked fairly well and since I did not see a good way to fix it...they're back on the same way. :dunno:

Anyone have a good solution for holding the square backed door panel wire springy things onto the door panels on the '70?
I guess maybe a good glue?
I should have took a  :picture:  i know   :(

on the + side my drivers door window isn't loose any longer.

Once the mounts are tore out it pretty much ruins the cardboard. I have had them in bad enough condition where the only way to mount the carpet was to glue it to the door panel.

  :iagree:

Some good glue, and a couple of big clamps to hold it until the glue dries will work.

you mean the ones that go into the metal of the door or the ones on your carpet cardbord? the ones on the back of my door panel have broken off too, but i dont have the carpet to cover screws so we went with duct tape, lots and lots of duct tape.
