340 rebuild
« on: April 16, 2007 - 09:45:08 PM »
I have a 72 340 that i am wanting o build for my '71 challenger, but i need some advice on what i should do about components for the build as in get a rebuild kit or piece things together and what kit/components to buy. I am not lookin for huge horsepower as i want a driver/cruiser and occasional 1/4 mile pass. i am building a 543 stroker so i am not worried about huge power out of the 340...thanks a ton in advance for the help!...God Bless...M@

WHile they are cost effective, I'm not a fan of kits. I like to choose different stuff, and in terms of bearings and pistons, the oversizes are dependant on what the shop finds with the cores. I fidn it easier to peice things together, and I let the shop get the bearings for me.

Me too, but, you can build a kit with the parts you need too. Forged pistons, ect...........from the sound of it, you don't need forged pistons or anything special.

Lower the compression, and cam the stroker accordingly!   :burnout:

Is this being built as a place holder for the big one? What is your real timeline for the big one? A basic rebuild on a 340 will run around $3000 for a complete long block where I live. If it will be years before the big one and it's driveline are ready, then I would rebuild the 340, stick a modern cam in it, and drive the car. Dont overspend, but it will need to be reliable and able to survive on pump gas.
