Newbie with a question....
« on: April 17, 2007 - 12:01:17 PM »
Hi All,

Great site you guys have here!  My brother and I are restoring two '72 Cudas, one auto, one stick.  We've started a site for them, it's: www.twocudas.com.
I have a disassembly question; my car (the stick) has a fluid-drive 7-blade fan.  Can anyone tell me the best way to remove this from the front of the motor?  The radiator, alternator, P/S pump, etc are all out, I am just having a hard time with the fan.  Seems that there are four bolts that need to be removed, but when trying to break them free, the whole thing spins -fan, pulley, etc.  I looked in the shop manual -no help there.

Any and all help is most welcome.

Thanks!

I usually will grab the pulley with one hand and loosen the bolts with the other hand, if that does not work, I have someone else grab the pulley while I loosen the bolts. Are you going to restore the 340 4 speed car back to original, or what are your plans? How bout the color, going original B5 blue? Looks like a fun project. :2thumbs:

Thanks!!  Looks like it's time to break out the penetrating oil.  :clueless:

Yep, planning on brining the 4speed pretty close to original ... with a few exceptions: gonna lose the vinyl top, going to add headers (TTI), Edelbrock 650cfm thunder series carb, have the motor bored .030, upgrade the cam a bit, but that's about it.  The car will be the original B5 'True Blue' and the motor will appear stock, retaining the original intake, air cleaner, color, etc etc etc.

Hope to roll it out late Fall of this year or Spring '08,

  Welcome!

If what 72hemi suggested still doesn't work, a big pair of adjustable pliers/channel locks might help.  Or try holding the pulley with an old fan belt wrapped around it and have someone else take off the bolts.  You can also try to hold a large pry bar against the crank pulley and the fan pulley to keep it from turning.

What part of New Hampshire are you from?  My car was originally from MacKensie Motors in Manchester, NH.  It's now Bonneville and Sons Ford/Kia.  The original owner of my car was from Goffstown, NH.

Nice website!  On Dan's car, that EG5 code is weird.  I would think that it should be E55 for the 340 engine code.

Hope you get the fan off!   :2thumbs:

That definitely looks like a G to me, too. (Definitely isn't a 5 like it should be.) :misbehaving:

I've had the car since 11/2003.  I got it from a guy that raced Mustangs up in Suncook  ??? , north of Goffstown.  He bought it in 2001 from the original owner.  He didn't do much with it, just parked it in a barn with 3 Mustangs.  The original owner thought he blew the engine but just the neck of the radiator fell off, so I soldered it back on and happy ever after.  Engine has never been taken apart and runs well.

Maybe it was a Ma Mopar typo, that "G".  Stuff like that happens.  Makes that take kinda unique!  :grinyes:

Have fun here.  Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions.  There's usually someone willing to lend a hand!

An impact gun'll get those bolts off lickety split.  It puts the hits on the head quicker than the force can transfer into the piece to actually move it.  Of course, getting the motor to an air-powered impact gun can be tough, unless you know someone with a rechargeable one.
