Cooling fan and radiator questions
« on: April 19, 2007 - 09:54:44 AM »
I just added a fan shroud and found out it didn't fit the fan (Fan shroud from Mopar Performance), I'm missing about 0.2 cm for it to clear. My 'cuda is a 383 4bbl/HP A/C car with a 26" Radiator part No. 2998 908. Don't know the fan clutch part No. is. But the Fan has 5 blades and it's part No is 4140 063. I thought all big block had a 7 bladed fan. And not a 5 blades fan. Or am I wrong?

To confuse you even more, my 440 has a six blade fan with a 26" radiator. Sorry I can't help out here.

My 'cuda does not have the original engine. But it is a 70 383.

Here's a picture of the fan. I thinking of getting a 7 blade fan as it will cool the engine more.

Yes, a seven blade fan will cool the engine more, the trade-off is a little loss in horse power, as the seven blade fan takes a little more Ooomph to turn. If you don't run hot, I'm not sure I would mess with it. Just my thoughts.  :2cents:

Hey Widing,

I bought the fan for the 'cuda about a year before you owned the car; it originally had a terrible aluminum fan which did nothing. This fan has always cooled the 'cuda really well; even when we took it to Le Mans and were stuck in traffic in 30 degree C heat. If you're concerned about the cooling, I don't think it's an issue but of course if you want it to look stock, then maybe you'd need to replace the fan.

Hey Rich, how are you?

Well I have some cooling problems. So I'm going to add the 7 blade fan. When I was in queue the car started to overheat, so I had to drive in the bus lane to cool the engine.

If you go with the 7 blade fan be sure to get the heavy duty clutch unit to go with it. The standard clutch won't spin the 7 blade fan fast enough to work correctly. Been there!!   Just my  :2cents:

THAT 5 blade fan  is most likely   the one that MP sells.

I agree with Ted, I bought my fan and clutch from MP and it looks exactly the same (5 blade) as yours.

If it's the M/P clutch, mine doesn't seem to ever lock the fan clutch until the temp gets to 200 or so. Once it does "lock up" it definitely moves some air even with the 5 bladed fan. You could get a fan clutch from a parts store like autozone or kragen for a early (70's) pickup and try that. The clutch on my 73 D200 locked up at about 175 or so, think I paid about35 -40 bucks for  mine.
