Brighter headlights
« on: October 28, 2003 - 05:20:58 PM »
Headlights need to be brighter for me 8)
I was thinking of getting the Hella high-intensity head lights from Yearone.
Has anyone done or seen this done and is it a big improvement over stock?

Are you lights just not bright enough or are the dimming with engine speed?

I forgot the names buy my old barracuda had a light in it from the junk yard fender, it was interesting to have 1 bright light and 1 $3.00 bulb.

just a small question but if 1 puts normal light in the high beam slots in a challenger or 71 cuda and has the high beams on they will not be on high beams just 4 vs 2 light right ??? and thus tons of light and you wont blind people.

If you are looking for brighter headlights, you might want to install relays to control the juice to the headlights vs. routing it through the dash.  Check out the link below for more info.  I did this on my 68 Cuda, what a difference it made.

How about just an upgrade to the HO Halogens, anybody done this?

I had a set of Boschs lights years ago, was not happy with the coverage of them. Still have a set of 4 if anybody else would like a set ;D

Hello 73,  If you do not already have halogens in your car, then that change alone will help a lot.  If you do, then consider the upgrade unit, such as the Silver Star from Sylvania sold by Advance Auto (& others too I'm sure)  If the firewall connector is not in optimum condition, then either bypass it, or use relays as suggested.  Another possibility is to do both.  My experience w/ Mopar alternators is that if they are working properly, you will see little or no dimming at idle.  My '65 has the single field alternator, & it is barely noticeable.   I think all E body cars will have the dual field unit as OEM equipt, & as such should be better than my single field unit.  Ovmf

I've found a very big difference just by changing over to regular HO Halogens.

Good point, I guess it's up to you but I myself would go for Halogens on the outer lights/Main and keep the orignals for high beam. I'm not 100% sure yet what I'll be doint but know I need to change as my current stock bulbs are very dim.

Hope someone does this little mod and lets us know how they turn out.  :D

I've done the relays- they work real great- about 13.6 volts to the headlights- so they are bright- but was wondering about the part numbers for the units!!!!

For 2 lamp cars (70 & 72 to 74 Cudas) Use H6024 Sylvania or GE. Cost about $7.00 at Advance, probably similar at NAPA.  4 lamp cars (71 Cuda, all Challengers) use H5006 for outside (Hi & Low) & H5001 for inside (Hi only)  To get max benefit you need to change all four as the lo beams switch to high also when on high lights.  If you dont change the hi beam too, you will not get the full pattern.  Oh yes, these are approx $7.00 also.  Sylvania makes a Silver Star version of the H6024 (H6024ST) that is supposed to be 40% brighter than the regular Halogen bulb, & it sells for about $20.00.  These same sealed beams can be used in Chargers, Coronets, Roadrunners etc.      Ovmf

Oh yes, forgot to mention.  All sealed beam lights have a 3 digit code at the top in the middle of the lens, IE 2B1 for 6054s.  If you get this code off your light, you can use any light that has the same code on it.  This goes for trucks too.  Now all you have to do is decide for regular halogen, Clear Blue, or Silver Star.   Ovmf
