single stage or base coat clear coat?
« on: April 21, 2007 - 10:58:26 AM »
I'm painting my cuda sassy grass green with base coat clear PPG. I was told I should paint my trunk and engine compartment with a single stage paint, but I want the paints to match. Are they correct when they tell me this, and if so can I use ditzzler paint?????

I have seen color variences (differences) using the same manufacturer. PPG especially. I cannot vouch for sassy grass green, but I have had problems with red. I always spray everything with whatever the outside body is painted with.

I used PPG base clear on the outside of my 71 and single stage on the jams, and the colors were very close but there was a slight varience.

Yeah I'd say if you have the budget for it, do a two-stage over the whole car.  Not to mention the extra layer of clear will help protect against fluids, oils, especially brake fluid.  If something messes up a single-stage, you're SOL.  Besides if it's being painted all at once, it's probably easier than masking and using different paint mixes, even if it is the same color.  (I know I'm a newb here, but I've got some painting experience.)

I have used both systems from PPG with Good results, but not both on the same vehicle.  The problem with using both on the same job no matter what brand you use is that Paint is mixed with Piegments at the time you purchase it and even with the computerized measurement it is impossible to get two batches exactally the same. They can be so close you can't tell till you put them together but they will be different.
I would suggest you use what you are most comfortable with but use the same system for the whole JOB.

Use the base/clear..  and the same paint from the same batch. If your running low on the original gallon you bought, buy a quart or two and use them  FIRST when you
start painting the outside of the car, then finish with your Original gallon for the last coat or two. :2cents:

I use single stage inside, for ease, money, and repair reasons. Brake fluid eats all paint, but you can easily spot repair chips and scratches in door sills and inner fenders. You cannot repair clearcoated spots without more clear. It is easier if it doesnt go thru the clear, but if you hit color, it's a PITA. When things are properly seamed and masked during painting, you would be very hard put to find the change from SS to B/C.

The first was Sherman WIlliams in the late 80s. Daytona Blue Metallic. I did a yellow and orange cars in single stage SW. Cant recall the paint line name exactly. I've done FE5 red and TX9 black in the line Napa carrys... I think it's Martin Senior. It's not great stuff (coverage is average) but it stays looking nice for a while (well, 3 years in the NE and counting), lays out nice, and has very fast reducers available because a lot of my painting is done in a small average heated garage. So slow reducers may run. I did a generic yellow with graphics in red and blue. Some colors cannot be purchased in SS. The choice for my Swinger is just such an animal, but the paitn is a one year only deal, and a modern color. Metallics may look different to someone who is looking if you're doing a show car. That's why clears were really developed anyway. I also use urethane clear (the best Napa has for that paint line...) over them. A great clear makes an average paint really pop. The TX9 '68 barracuda I am doing now will have the same treatment. Single stage in engine bay, trunk, and jambs, plus undersides of hood and trunk. BC/CC on the exterior. The seam will be under the flange the fenders bolt to, under the drip rails on the trunk, and the pinch weld at the carpet edge.
