Changing the spark plugs
« on: April 23, 2007 - 03:03:07 AM »
Hi,

planning to change the spark plugs to my 70´Challenger 440 Magnum. Is Champion RJ12YC plugs the correct one? What´s the correct spark gap?

Those plugs are located in pretty hard place... any hints how to change them?

Thanks in advance!

Are you sticking to Champion plugs for a reason?

If you want a better plug go to http://www.ngk.com

If you have a completely stock engine with no electronic ignition and no high quality aftermarket spark plug leads then the 35thou gap most plugs come with will be fine.

Better ignition systems work better with larger gaps. Up to 60thou in some cases.

As for getting the plugs out. Well it is not easy but you will find a way. The manual says to take some out from under the car but you don't need to do that.

Too bad you don't have that Hemi engine with the easy to reach plugs! :roflsmiley:

Sorry, I only wish I had your problems.  :grinyes:  I only have a 340.  :crying: (Sorry, big block envy....)

I use autolite 306's - - - Napa sells them! The 499 stroker runs good on them! .045 gap!
You can change all the plugs with no problem on a 440 except for 2 of them!

#3 plug I have to use a ratchet with an offset neck due to steering box...no big deal!
#6 plug I lay under the car to reach it! its way easier!

I have 1 7/8th Headers also!

Theres champions in my 440 right now but I've never had good luck with them. and I think since I'm pulling the motor I'll swap them out with either some Autolite or Bosch.

In 30 years of messing around I have only found two plugs that I really like and I have tried all of them.

The NGKs come out on top for me. I am going to try the iridium versions with the sharp point soon. Sparks love sharp points.

NGK in my far Northern English dialect means "N'arf Gans Kwick". Which translated into Southern poofta English is "I say old chap. Those plugs have given me splendid acceleration".

The other plug I like is Denso. Sometimes marketed as Accel in the USA.

The Champ # you listed is correct & I have not had problems with Champ plugs but I do know how to tune a carb
.035 gap  with stock coil , .045 with High output coils

Thanks for the information! Maybe I´ll try the NGK plugs first if those are working better with stock set up.

I just put in RJ14YC in my 383, thats what the book called for?  Are those too hot of plugs?  Sorry to hijack, but I pulled out some autolights someone put in there, the threads were about a half inch too short.   :pullinghair: :stomp: :swear:

Oh, and I would rather pull the motor than put new plugs in again.   :pullinghair:

Just kidding, it takes patience.

Umm the RJ series barely has 1/2" of threads , you didn`t use a long reach plug like the RN series did you ???
If you did get them out
the RJ 14 should be ok as long as you don`t suddely have detonation

That is what I put in.  RN14YC.  No good?  What did I mess up?   :walkaway:

The reason I put those in is because when I went to the parts store, a 1971 383 wasnt listed in the Champion book.  So we agreed to go with the 1970, figured it was the same thing.  The book called for RN14YC, he even showed it to me to double-check.   :dunno:  :walkaway:
