440: Is there a gasket for the valley pan?
« on: April 23, 2007 - 12:03:34 PM »
Swapping in a six-pack.

There was no gasket between the valley pan and block when I took it off. Just some form-a-gasket sealant.

Is there a specific valley pan gasket or is the pan iteslf the gasket?

And if the pan IS the gasket, is it reuseable?

Many thanks!

I just got a replacement and the valley pan has paper gaskets with it.

the pan is the gasket.

   :iagree:  :iagree:  :iagree:

Most definitley NOT re-usable. The Fel-pro gaskets should be around $20 at your local auto parts dealer. Use Gasgacinch, or something simliar around the heads on both sides of the gasket. Use RTV on the front and back of the gasket where the bars hold it down.

I used paper gaskets on either side of my valley pan simply because I had them :smilielol:  Sprayed a little red high tack gasket sealer, works good.

I usually replace valley pans a few times before getting a new one.

I scuff the used ones around the sealing surfaces with a cup shaped de-coking wire brush (by hand) to rough up the surface so a gasket sealer has something to grip.
Thin layer of high temp sealer. Leave to "go off" a bit. Then bolt it on. Never had a vacuum leak.

If you just pipe a thick layer of sealent on and bolt it on wet then you will probably have problems with it.

Well... I didn't scuff it up, but I did run a small bead of high-temp sealant, let it sit for a few and then bolted it down.

<crosses fingers>

Here's to a leak-free seal, because I do not want to pull that six-pack off again any time soon.

Leaning over the fender with that setup on fully extended arms... being careful not to scratch the valve covers...

Heh. My feet came off the ground at the end!  :-)

I have had my M1 intake on and off several times. I reused the metal valley pan each time. I got replacement paper gaskets from FelPro, coated them with a thin layer of RTV and they seal perfectly each time. No worries.

I generally use the paper gasket betweenthe pan & head to make sure there is no oil leak , I also use the Fel Pro 1215 pan to block the heat cross over , these cars are not driven in cold weather generally anymore

How thin are these paper gaskets? I tried to get some from over here in the UK and they were rather thick fel-pro gaskets that were too thick to allow the manifold bolts to line up with the holes.

If there are very thin paper gaskets available i would use them.
