Seat Coverings. How Hard is it to Install??
« on: April 24, 2007 - 08:04:28 PM »
I am just about to order my seat upholstery.  Still deciding who to get it from.  (YO, Leg, or Pad).  Anyway, If you leave the new covers in the sun to warm them up, won't they be east to install?  Guess I am hoping for an easy button!!

A hair dryer could be helpful too.

I read the Project Charger book and I believe he used a hair dryer to get the kinks out of his vinyl top before installation. I guess it just makes everything more workable and pliable.

I know it's not a seat, but if you'd rather work inside, the dryer might be the way to go.

I usually recover about 3-4 sets of mopar seats a year. IMO use Legendary not PYU covers if possible. Legendary fit better and have all the little things right to make them look original. Not that PYU are bad they just don't fit quite as nice and they will have for example exposed zippers. I use a electric oven to heat the covers, Don't use gas. Set it at about 200-250 put them in for about 30 min. make sure the face of the covers are not on the grates and they are as far from the elements as possible. I have used the laying them in the sun method and i works good also but do it on a warm day and obviously it works better on dark covers. Go to a local hardware store/crafts store and buy hog rings and a hog ring pliers and your set. Just watch how you take them apart and do one at a time.

David, this pic. is from Cody's page but shows the most difficult part to get right.(his is a '70 with open back mine a '73 but that area is the same)  See the wrinkles in the corners at the top of the insert, I probably spent more time there than anywhere & it turns out that most of that is taken out with tension at the very bottom, warm up the vinyl & keep pulling at the bottom before you put the hog rings in. I think some wrinkle there is par for the course tho. Also found a broom handle handy to slide into the tight spaces to help position the cover on the cushion.

The back seat is easy but the fronts are difficult.  If the foam is still good that will help.  A local shop quoted me $500 to install the front covers!

I must be out of touch but who is PYU??....By the way, I got the best price from Dante's.  I would probably use the sun method.  The wife needs to not have to clean the stove!!

David:
I can only speak from my experience.  The covers for my car (1970 black vinyl, with NOS cloth inserts) came from Legendary, and they are beautiful.  I am having a friend install them, and they fit really well (after repairing a bit of the old foams).  As you correctly stated, it helps a bunch to heat them in the sun.

I ordered mine at the Nationals in Columbus, and they had a 'show special' price.  They were still VERY expensive, but look awesome.

I hope the picture below helps you out - Give it a try!  Good luck.

Thanks Wade for the pic and Tom, thats the button I needed.  I do believe that I will try to do it myself.  If they don't fit right, just take them off and try again.  There are a lot of things I have learned on this site that I didn't think I had the nerve to take on.  Proved myself wrong.  A person has to try or they don't succeed at anything.  But the question remains....who is PIU?
