Anyone thought of E85?
« on: April 25, 2007 - 10:04:47 PM »
Has anyone kicked around the idea of converting their cars to E85? Just thinking about alternative stuff and all. From what i have read its basicly like converting to alcohol.

Problem is where the heck do you buy E85?

I am actually doing a report on alternative fuels for one of my engineering classes right now. Interesting stuff, they can make it out of garbage as well, but the conversion is like 76 gallons of ethanol for every ton of trash, but than trash in the landfills I guess. Edelbrock is now making a E85 compatible carb for us old car guys. Also just a side note Chrysler since 1998 has had more than 10% of its vehicles produced are E85 compatible, they just aren't advertising it like everyone else, and they own a company that builds electric cars.

The only problem with E85 is that the air/fuel ratio has to be about 9:1 which means worse mileage.  But the benefit of E85 is the higher octane, which means that you can run a much higher compression ratio.  With a higher compression, that means less throttle to get moving, which could allow the engine to get close to the same mileage, if it is built correctly.

Also, not sure if it is true, but I have heard that E85 is not a clean running fuel, like everyone first predicted.

Jacksboys,
I read the other day that if everyone starts using the E85 there will be more pollution than with regular gas.  E85 will eliminate some bad air but put out other bad stuff to pollute the air.  I think I read it on MSNBC.

If you convert to E85, you need to remove all the rubber and plastic from your fuel system.

for you Holley guys this company is doing E85 http://www.quickfueltechnology.com/home_2.htm
by chance I saw a article on converting a Thermoquad but it was a very invasive procedure I would never attempt.....
Who knows what we will be forced to do in the future.....Maybe H or LP.

IF you plugged your Prius in to two 220 circuits would that make it a 440?

Ethanol is a decent fuel, but has it's own drawbacks.

thanks for the input. I was just watching shows on alternative fuels and all that, thats what sparked the intrest.

I wonder what they will make us all go to in the next 30-40 years. You know its coming, just a matter of when. I hope there will be a conversion of some sort to what they will want so we can all still enjoy our cars.
