Stock 383 Magnum, what cam?
« on: April 26, 2007 - 07:23:50 PM »
Hi everyone,
I'm really new to the forum but was hoping to get a few ideas on cam recommendation for my car?
It's a 70 R/T with stock everything, cast exh. manifolds, intake, 3.23 diff. , p. brakes etc...  The only changes have been a new Edelbrock 650 Thunder Series carb (old Holley was very badly warped) and a new single bolt double roller timing chain.
As far as manufacturers and quality, is there any I should really look at or others that I'd be best to stay away from?
I'd kind of like to keep it simple if possible and not have to get into changing springs, retainers, etc.  I'm not really looking for big power increases or anything, I'd just like to fix it up a bit and enjoy driving it while the weather is nice.

Anyways, I look forward to hearing any recommendations, & thanks allot for the great site!

Brian

I would probably use a Engle K54 cam & yes I would change the valve springs if they are 30 years old

I went with a stock replacement cam from mopar performance for my 440.  came with lifters and the cam and lube for $184? if I remember right.  Ordered it from Summit.

Thanks for your advice Chryco, I guess I really am being much too cheap trying to reuse that old stuff. :nono:

I'd really thought about the MP cam but i keep hearing it's "too old of a grind" and the quality isn't there... have you been happy with it? :clueless:

I ran the 509 in my '69 Charger R/T with 440 and a few other goodies, I liked it, even the idle was nice....... Until I idled it up..... Then it ran smooth.
