Some major h-h-h-hesitation
« on: April 28, 2007 - 07:29:27 AM »
My car has some major hesitation when stepping on the gas.  Not just normal carb hesitation either.  When I'm cruising about 25 or slower (even at a stop) it takes a few taps on the pedal for it to come out of it.  Vaccuum leak?  Time for a carb rebuild?  Its the original 383 2bbl from '71.

I dont think its the accel. pump because I looked down there when I had my dad step on the gas, plenty of gas going in.   :clueless: :1zhelp:  Thanks!

Hard to guess what is going on there , typically accelerator pump but if your ios working something else is going on , & carb rebuild is not a bad place to start  with a 35 YO carb

It may not just be fuel. When was the last time point dwell was checked? Or the vaccum advance/timing curve checked?

Errrr... :eek7:

I got a timing light   :dunno:

I just put a pertronix kit in it, and it runs better than it did.  It was worse before.

Point dwell?   :clueless:  Guessing I dont have that anymore.

Im a  :newbie:  when it comes to ignition.   :walkaway:

Your car would have originally had a points style ignition, that's where the dwell comes in, as moper suggested. It appears you have electronic ignition though if you have a Pertronix kit on now. I still say the problem sounds carb. related.

Just to be sure check your PCV valve, you can disconnect the vac. hose at the source, put a plug on it & see if the problem goes away. The fact that pumping the accelerator makes things better makes me think that your issues are with something that can be affected by vacuum or pressures, like sticky float needles.

All good suggestions for ya there.

Also as I recall, I think a points coil might not work right with an electronic ignition and there is a difference in the condensors, ie internal in coil and external beside coil.

And maybe check the weights in the distributor or if you got the vaccum advance bar hung up, or the snap ring for the top plate isnt in right :clueless:

If you put your hand over the carb, does it idle up? How much fuel pressure?

Yup, Pertronix will lose the dwell issues. The other things should be checked tho.

Thanks guys.  I will try all this when it gets nicer out.  We finally got some rain after about a month without it.
