Gauge Paint

OK, here's a good one for all you paint people out there. I'm still rewiring the car, and now i'm up to the gauges. I've got everything out of the car and disassembled. I'm going to reface the gauges, but want to sand and put a base layer of paint on them first.

What's the best kind of paint to use? I don't want anything that's going to drip or look like poop.

   I'm crazy.. i try the hardest things sometimes. Gotta give it a shot tho.. you can always sand them and do it again.

isnt there a vendor somewhere that makes guage face over lay pieces that you can glue down?

Yes, there are a couple of guys who make the gauge faces, and actually I got the white faces from www.whitegauges.net.  The thing is, the rest of that gauge "cup" is flaking paint or rusty. So i want to clean it up nice before I go and stick on the new faces. (Just being anal about the details.)

I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow night. I'm going to get some paint and some sand paper. Maybe i'll take some pics and post them here (only if it turns out well.. heh).

Good news. I used 600 grit sandpaper and some krylon flat black paint. I taped up the movement on the clock, tach and speedo. Then i sanded it and gave it 2 coats of flat black. They look awesome. I'll take some pics and post them later on. I'm going to let them dry a day or so, and then i'll go for the faces.

Those did turn out nice. I got hold of some aircraft polyurethane white and did mine. The white color was a dead-nuts match and you cant tell where the overlay meets the face

That's nice. The white on white looks pretty hot as well.

I also used black metallic on the plastic bezel, and stripped and polished the overlay bezels. All came out shweet!
