Repop Door Panels

I've read a lot of the past threads - and I understand that many believe it best to re-paint original door panels.   I agree -- but mine are white and not in great shape and I haven't had much luck in finding any.      So..... I think I'm going to invest in the re-pops and would appreciate any feedback -- is it best to order them from Year One so if issues arise I can easily return them -- or are there "better" ones from another vendor/manufacturer?

From personal experience you can return them with some photo proof. Once they see what you're talking about they will send you some new ones free of charge. Though, the quality IMO is lacking, dreadfully. They didn't line up (not even close) on the 2 sets we got. They were made by Palco, possible the drunk section of the company because we all had a good laugh at them from down here, crap. I would hold out until you find some good originals on eBay, it's the only way you'll get the best fit you can. No doubt you can make the repros fit but it's still lacking.

The Palco panels I bought weren't too bad fit-wise. The grain didn't quite look like the originals, and they just felt like cheap hard plastic. I ditched them for a set of originals.

I just read in either MCG or MoparMuscle of someone else who is making these now, but I can't remember who. I'll try and remember to look again tonight and let you know.

Aside from the product sold by Year One -- has anyone heard of panels from this vendor on ebay (or had any experience with him?) :

He apparently sells a lot of different panels and parts for a number of vehicles..

Hmm, 

  His panels cost some major bucks.  I looked at one of his auctions, and he won't reveal who is making his panels(hope it isn't Palco). He claims the grain looks correct... but does it feel like a rock? I have no suggestion here, other than spend lesser on some originals. This guy is a risky option on my opinion. Keep in mind, you can always re-dye original panels to suit your needs.

Yeah, that's kinda what i thought. I couldn't imagine there is a big line of plastic vendors wanting to repop E body panels.

I still think you're much better off sending the originals to Just Dashes for re-finishing.  Mine look great.  The only complaint I've heard from people on this board is that the grain isn't exactly like the originals.  Like Palco's is?  The quality at JD is great and you know they'll fit.

The grain with the Palco's isn't quite right for sure. Can you say what Just Dashes charged you? I don't want to pry, but given the re-pops are approaching $400 a set for door panels, any option is looking good.

Bob's sells the Accu-Form panels.  The grain is not 100% correct and they are definitley not the same type of plastic. They sound a lot more hollow when installed.   I have used Accu-Form several times and have found that the Challenger panels fit much better than the Cuda ones.  They may not be what you want if you are doing  "concourse" type of resto but the are pretty darn good for drivers and "Local Show" winners.  The car in my Sig pic had them as well as about 1/2 dozen other cars I've built.  If you need every panel, the interior will look great because all panels will match.  If you are just doing door panels, best bet is re-spraying some decent originals or having Just Dashes re-do them. If you mix and match originals and re-pops it will look a little bit odd.

Incidentally, I am also a distributor for Accu-form and can probably get you a little better deal on them.

Mike:   In addition to a "ballpark" cost estimate for Just Dashes requested above -- can you give any indication of how tough of shape yours were in to begin with?    Were they scratched and gouged at all?  Chaulky?   Also, how have they held up so far (how long)?   Hope I'm not being too nosy!

Just Dashes charged me $1000 for all four panels. That $1000 INCLUDED return shipping and a dash speaker grille.  I think the speaker grille was $89 and the shipping was (I think) $109.  My panels were pretty sound to begin with (just chalky) but I don't think that had any effect on the price.  The price was quoted to me over the phone (sight unseen) before I sent them in and they never asked me about condition.  You can see photos on the "Interior" page of my website at www.mikes73.com.

One caveat, though.  Plan early.  I shipped the panels to JD the day after Labor Day and received them back the week between Christmas and New Years.
