86 D250
« on: May 02, 2007 - 07:21:42 PM »
I bought my truck new in 86 and after 227k+ on the original 318 2bbl it's time for a fresh motor. I picked up an 87 360 (and its torque converter) out of a similar 87 D250 last year. My engine guy is supposed to get my truck friday and have it back to me sunday. He asked me "do you want it built tight or loose" and i said tight. It'll even have working A/C for the first time in several years :worshippy.
He installed on the front of each head what he called 'bullet' freeze plugs - saying if it experiences any serious heat buildup, they're designed to pop out. Any of ya's had experience with them before? Also other stuff like Melling, Clevite, Perfect Circle, and Mopar Performance with Double Springs in either the intake or exhaust valves - i forget exactly which he said. Can anyone verify if i have '308' heads? The only thing close to a part or casting number that i noticed is the 4343475 in the one pic. I wish i knew more about the mechanical side of things so's i could make better sense to everyone but i'm just happy to be this close to being able to get in my truck and going where i want when i want :jumping:
I've had myself in a tight for quite some time now, but little by little things are finally getting right :clapping:

What he glued onto the front head frost plug is a tattle-tale if the engine ever gets overheated, it melts the lead out of the center. No coolant comes out, these are used to deny warranty on engines as they can tell now if it has been overheated.

Thanks  Seeing as how Science was my worst subject in school, i got a bit worried as to what temp lead starts to melt but at 327 degrees, i should be safe...i think ::)  :grinyes:

I have also been encouraged to use distilled water as opposed to tapwater

I'm needing an oil pan and timing chain cover so the install is pushed back to next weekend...for now :violin:

Distilled water is better but I would say the main thing is having water that is close to a ph level of around 7, this is neither acidic or alkaline.

Didn't you get the pan off the truck engine you used as a core? You will also need one new engine bracket as well. I'm not positive anymore but it may be the driver side.

The 360 had its mount brackets with it, and you're right - it's the right side that's different on a 360  My original motor is a 318. The core engine's (360) oil pan got severely dented during shipping last year so it needs replacing. I think the oil pans were not interchangeable between a 318 and 360 on a truck but i could be wrong on that...

You're right about the oil pan.  The 318 and 340 used one oil pan and the 360 is a different size at the sealing surfaces front and rear.   Your 360 already came out of a truck, so you should be okay with it's truck pan. the problems come when you try to put a truck pan in a car or vice-versa.

The freshened up 87 360 is in and running smooth after replacing the stock Quadrajet with an Edelbrock 1405. Here are a couple of before and after shots. Nuthin' fancy but better than it was

Absolutely :grinyes: Thank you for your help, all your info was spot on :)

Of course, now come the bugs. An Eddy #1481 Chrysler Kickdown adapter is to be in tomorrow morning but i still have a feeling that the 318-2 and 360-4 used different kickdown rods; I seem to hear voices whispering Lo...kar, Lo...kar  :working:

Part # 4287963 is the correct carb to trans (kickdown) rod for a 360-4 on my 87 360 with 727 trans. Straight swap, no muss/no fuss :working:
