Swapping gears on 8 3/4?

I just picked up a 741 case 8 3/4 open rear with 3.55's in it. I want to swap the ring and pinion over to one of my sure grip center sections. I have both types of sure grips, a 5.13 clutch type and a 2.94 and 3.23 cone type. Will there be a problem swapping the gears over to one of the other carriers? I prefer to swap over to the 5.13 clutch type as it is more easily rebuildable. Thanks for any help,

It should be alright if the other diff is the same style case.
There were 3 styles: 741, 742 and 489. I don't think you can interchange.

So, just make sure the cases are the same. :cheers:

Thanks for the infor guys. Looks like I dinged myself over by not making sure it was a 742 or 489 case. Anyone need a set of weak suck 3.55's?  :bigsmile:

the sure grip will swap but the gears have to remain in the 741 case as I am sure you now know
 unless you have some serious traction I bet you still cannot break the weak 741 carrier/gears

so I could use them along with a sure grip rear for say a slightly built 440? I will build it to be a solid street cruiser with maybe 500-550 horse at the flywheel.

as long as the tires will spin I highly doubt you can hurt the gears

What transmission are you running? Auto or Manual?
If it's a manual you may run a greater risk of blowing something.

727. I most likely will not even have a stall convertor so I am hoping it will be fine. I think 3.55 would be perfect for me. If my engine is strong enough I would like to even consider keeping the 2.94 sure grip that is in the car now. I like the nice low rpm cruising speed.

i would leave the 3:55 ring and pinion in the case that its all ready set up in and just stick the sure grip unit from one of your other center sections in it...

  the sure grip units interchange between the different center sections...   most you'll have to do is change the bearings on it i believe...

  i don't think i would worry about the 741 case too much...  especially with an automatic....    i'm running a 741 in my dart and last time out had about 6" of air under the left front tire and it is still going strong....

That makes me breathe a little easier. I did not want to spend 60 bucks on a pig I could not use.

Considering all the max wedges and earlie hemies used the 741s I dont think u will have a problem...Ive seen a couple A bodies running 10s on a 741 case..............kim..........
