Wheel/Drum
« on: May 08, 2007 - 01:38:30 PM »
I have been away a bit but have had an odd issue come about...

72 Challnger Large Bolt Pat. Drums on the front.

Using Form Road wheels... only real difference is the 1/2" width(as far as I know)

First trip down the road....bad thumping in the front, like the tire had a flat spot....
time goes by tried various things....

two of these rims do the same thing,. but if I put a Mopar vesion(requires the trim rings) it does not do it...

The rims were actualy hitting the upper control arm... but the other does not.

a friend said he had had problems with the front drums (that are ribbed) doing the same thing with certain rims....

Any thoughts... :working:

Since it was a thump instead of a grind, perhaps it was a wheel weight bonking the ball joint as it passes by. Switch to a stick on weight instead of a clamp on.

tire are not balanced...it would have knocked the weight off had there been one...

If there isn't a weight fitted then the rim must be buckled or not sitting on the hub properly. Check to see if the mounting face of the wheel is seating on the drum face.
Make sure the centre hole of the wheel is large enough to go over the bearing hub, some "fraud" wheels have slightly smaller centres and at first glance look like MOPAR wheels.

Definetly check the center register dimensions from the wheel to the hub. If the wheel is smaller, as some fords have, it is possible to bolt the wheel down thinking it is flat but once it has load applied to it, it slips on the register and is now off kilter enough to wack the control arm.

Typically you run into drum wheels that won't work on discs because of the offset needed to clear the caliper. I've never seen a disc wheel that won't work on a drum.

Check the back spacing of the Ford rim compared to the Mopar rim, not just the width.  A lot of the Ford rims have a larger back space than the Mopar ones.  That might be why the rim might be hitting the upper control arm.  If they were on the rear they might be coming close to the leaf springs.  1/2 might just be enough to hit.  Never know.

I remember on my brother's '86 T-Bird I swapped a different rim on front of his car and I went down the road and I heard a similar noise that you described.  Turns out the rim was contacting something, possibly the caliper, and it was only a weld on the rim that was doing it.

If you want to "Mickey It" and not get another couple of rims you might be able to get some wheel spacers to move the rim out a little if the back space is the issue.  But be careful with spacers, don't go to wide.  Try 1/2 first.  Just my 2 cents.  ;)

I was considering a spacer to see ... just need to find a set
