Oil Changes

Whenever you put in new oil in your car how long is it till it starts turning black in color mine seems to change blackish after a few miles or so

You just had that engine rebuilt, am I right? I only change mine once a year(1000-2000 miles), but it looks pretty good up until the last few months.

What kind of oil do you use?  In reality, it's not a bad thing if it turns blackish.  That means the detergents in the oil are doing their job keeping the motor clean.  If it is freshly rebuilt, you don't have to worry about breaking any sludge loose and creating problems.  Do you run a PCV valve?  If you don't, if it is clogged, or the car is running very rich, it may be getting contaminated prematurely.

I agree with the above, but also this could be a problem of your oil getting too hot. A friend of mine told me an oil cooler solved his problem. Just throwing that out there.

That doesn't sound right.  Is there an additive in the oil?  You can get the oil analyzed fairly inexpensively if you are concerned.

It is Castrol GTX 5w 30 ... yes there is a pcv built into the breather...

 I run Castrol GTX also, 10w-40 proof. It is clean after a year with 500 miles, but I change it anyways.

 The PCV valve at the driver side valve cover is connected directly to Manifold vacuum on the base of a Holley 650. Also an air filter to valve cover breather on the passenger side. I think this is a correct set up but, I've been wrong before.

Looked at mine the other day (havent changed it...yet) still looks pretty good. Can't really say how many miles I put on last year tho..

And, If it is a new motor, thats pretty ok. Its probably still breaking in. They do that for a while sometimes. and some engines just run dirtier than others. So I wouldn't worry too much yet, depending on how new it is.

I run usually beetween 1K - 2K a year and the oil looks fairly clean when it comes out at the end of the year. Engine has about 6K on it.

I would in no way put 5W-30 in my Chally. That's for the new cars. Way thin. 10W-30, or 10W-40 would do you better IMO.

Agreed but the oil only has 5W viscosity when it's very cold so it shouldn't really matter.  That said I use 10W30.
