Dog with torn ACL
« on: May 15, 2007 - 05:32:02 PM »
Just found out one of our two dogs,Rikor, has a torn ACL which needs surgery to repair at a cost of $1100-1400-ouch!The poor guy has already gone thru allergies and Lyme disease and now this.Surgery and 1-2 months recovery which is going to be the hard part as no running or playing and they are very high energy boys.To top it off there`s a good chance the other leg might go at some point.Anyone else been thru this with an animal?Poor unlucky Rikor is on the right,Rikki on the left.

I am a police canine handler/trainer and had a 6 year old German Shepherd, my partner, go through that surgery. It was the hardest thing in the world for me to see him try to recover from and he was never really right again. He went thru a lot of pain and had knee problems for the remainder of his time. With that said, it was worth it to have my partner around for a while longer. Problem is, as I was told by the orthapedic specialist, ACL tears in dogs result in very rapid onset arthritis so your damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I suppose that, as long as you don't expect the kind of thing that we do out of our working dogs, you won't be disappointed in his being a bit gimpy. My philosophy is that I will try to do everything I can to keep my partners alive and well, but will also not expose them to unneeded pain and suffering if there is no hope for a good life.
Finally, I had to walk my guy a minimum of 1 mile, three times a day, rain or shine. His surgery was in December, so I walked many a mile in snow and freezing rain, in Missouri weather. The walks were slow until he got to a point that we could speed him up. Made for some miserable conditions. Again, weigh the worth of your buddy, but be realistic. Tough call...

I have an Akita who had both of her knees done when she was 1 1/2 (she is now 5).  We had a rough time with one of the surgeries, but now she is fine and runs like the wind.  I have tons of suggestions for you about how to deal with this.  You can email me anytime at aprilpaonessa@aol.com and if you want I can call you if you need to talk about it.  There is also a wonderful yahoo group called orthodogs.  There are tons of people there who are going through the same thing.  There a a few different types of procedures for a torn ACL, did the surgeon tell you which type he was going to do?  For that price, it sounds like what is called a "traditional repair".  That would be my first choice if I had to do it all over again.  That is the type we had done when she tore the second ACL.  There are less chance of complications with the treaditional repair as apposed to what is called TPLO.  I wish you all the best of luck, I am sure you will get through it with flying colors!  Also, start them on Glucosamine suppliments right away.

They are only 4 yrs old so I hope he`ll be ok to run again after this. The hardest part will be the rehab period when we have to crate him and not let him play.   :walkaway:  He has been on glucosamine for a month or two already and the doc said to keep him on it for life.

I know it will be hard during the recovery period, but ya know what?  Me and my girl formed such a close bond during her recovery, and that I am happy for!
