I want to see oil pan baffles! How do YOU do them?
« on: May 16, 2007 - 12:47:31 PM »
I am working on rebuilding a 440, pretty much stock nothing special really. I am going to be using the 699 pan. I was really surpised when I pulled the pan off the engine and didn't find any baffles in it. Now I am trying to do some research on baffles and see what works and what doesn't.

If you have any comments, suggestions, tips or tricks, I would love to hear about them. As always if you have ANY pics of youre baffles (custom or original) in just about any mopar pan I would love to see them as well.

Thanks!

  :clueless:

I'm curious about these baffles.  Do you mean windage trays so the oil doesn't splash around?

I don't have a pic but my buddy welded a small horizontal baffle in the bottom section of the tray.  You just have to make sure it doesn't hit the pickup!  I would look at a Milodon tray and copy their design.

I bring the rear baffle forward as far as possible & angled slightly down into the sump & leave some small openings in the corner of the pan , the fromnt is done similarly but is less important , it just traps oil during braking when you are off the throttle...... generally

I plan on using the mopar performance windage tray. Its nothing special, my brother has been running one on his 383 for years. No problems yet. I think I am going to aim for a baffle that goes all the way around the "sump" of the pan. Very simialar to the one shown on the 440source page. Here... http://www.440source.com/oilpans.htm  it is the second one down - the chrome one. Let me know what you guys think.

Same idea , unless you are cornering extremely hard the side baffles will not make any difference
The windage tray works great too , the other option is a crank scraper also good for a few extra HP

I've read that the crank scraper has to be done custom, cause if it isn't within like an 1/8 of an inch from the crank it doesn't do any good.  Basically the closer the better.

I think the baffles and windage tray are two separate issues.  The baffle prevents starvation of the pump and the windage tray keeps oil off of the crank throws.

-Baffles keep the oil in the sump preventing starvation from uncovering the pick up
-Windage trays cut some oil off the crank & also pevent the windage from lifting the oil up in the sump & uncovering the pick up
-Scrapers remove Far more oil from a crank than a windage tray

for max results use all 3

Pic is shown without windage tray and swinging pick-up bolted in. It has a swinging pick-up at the rear behind the one-way trap door baffel, and crank scrapper. Also at the front, I had a 2" lip welded in to keep oil from splashing back up into the tray on hard braking for any that didn't get trapped in the rear of the pan on accel.
