Oil change
« on: May 18, 2007 - 03:30:46 PM »
I'm going to change the oil in my Challey tomorrow. 70 440-SIXPACK with less than 400 miles on it. Not going to use synthetic. I will buy the oil at Wal-mart. I have always used 10-40. Any suggestions on what type and will they have the right oil filter for me???

Since you want to run petrolium based oil, I can't help, as I am out of that loop now.  I know Walmart has a stash of Fram filters, but use anything but their orange one. Fram has a few others, one injects silicone into your engine, which I would avoid like the plaque. They do have some upper end filter that I did use once, I don't recall the name though. If you should happen to see something from someone other than Fram, you might want to try that out. Motorcraft for example. I am using one from K&N, but Walmart has a limited supply of those where I'm at.

Go to napa or carquest and get a filter. they are made by wix. Also last i heard some of the 'stp' little blue bottle additive isnt a bad idea to help get some zinc in the oil. i put castrol gtx in my daily driver, and used to be shell but switching to valvoline diesel (15w-40) oil in my Cuda

The guy who built my 440 is a well respected race engine builder who's engines are winning all over the west coast and he says DO NOT run  diesel oils in  gas engines because they will foam at high RPM, I'm not sure how high of RPM it takes. he says to use a quality 30W  and a half pint of GM EOS unless you're going to be running in cold weather . I'm sure some will disagree with him but  the main reason for the diesel oil is  zinc and most of it has been removed in the last year or two, so you should add EOS anyway.  something to think about anyhow.

If you feel like reading, this is an article I read in Hot Rod and have used many times when these discussions come up. The article explaines everything you need to know about why you need to select the right oil. It would be a shame to wipe the lobes off your cam!
http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/engine/flat_tappet_cam_tech/index.html

Hughes Engines has a good piece on this subject as well. http://www.hughesengines.com/general/techArticleDetail.asp?articleID=1000039
It is worth a read too.

Long story short: There is a star burst insignia/seal thing on the oil bottle. If it says "specially formulated for gasoline engines" or "newer cars" or "energy conserving" stay away from it. Also on the seal it will have the API rating, SH, SJ, SL, and especially SM is bad. Those rated oils have the least amount of ZDDP (the zinc) in them.

The oils that say for diesels, off-road use, or the 4X4 oils are pretty good. The best would be Royal Purple or something like that.

Goody, I hope your daily driver is a roller lifter motor or you don't care about cam wear. Castrol GTX has an API rating of SM, the worst rating. I have a bottle here, it says "Unique Anti-Sludge Formula". That would translate into "We took all the good stuff out."

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

Here is a story I found while at work, courtesy of tax payers dollars. ;) I was on break.
I was confused because I read on Hughes Engines web site about by-pass valves in filters. I found the study on minimopar and decided to pull one of the orange Frams of the shelf and cut it open.
It was pretty shocking as to how those things stay together when in use. It was made of thin cardboard, what looked like Elmers glue, and a flimsy by-pass valve. I showed the chief and he didn't really care but I hope some of you would.
We have Wix for the heavy equipment but we use the Fram in passenger vehicles. I don't know of how many engines have failed because of a cheap vehicle and I know it's not many in comparrison but I will use a Wix or better from now on.

Thank you for your input, go-fish! :2thumbs:
Very informative links, and it's highly appreciated.

I'll be using Jomar oil filters (As recommended by Hughes Engines), and Shell Rotella T 15W40 diesel oil next time i change oil.

I hope you get the older Shell Rotella that still has the C1-4 rating on it. The newer version doesn't.  :grinno:
