Edelbrock Thunder Series carbs
« on: May 22, 2007 - 08:28:25 PM »
Does anyone know if the Edelbrock Thunder Series carb is compatible with the '70-'71 340 air cleaner?  I am thinking about buying a new carb for my car, but I definitely want to use the original air cleaner housing.

If anyone knows anything about these carbs or have a better suggestion to work with my mildly rebuilt 70 340, please chime in.  I also wanted to know which model # Edelbrock is closest to the original AVS #4936.  Thanks for the help everybody!   ;D

I'm running an Edelbrock Performer Series 750 cfm, square-flange, electric choke carb, Part #1411. It fits under my factory dual snorkel air cleaner on my 440 Magnum. Not sure on the size difference between the air cleaners though (340 v 440). Beautiful carb that looks close to stock and is a dream to drive & tune. Out of the box and no hassle. Good response and drivability. Has been on 8 hour road trips and short 1 hour drives with no worries.

Not sure what you mean by lean, have heard it used heaps though.
You mean lean as in too small-a cfm? I didn't tune it (of course) the resto shop did. Runs perfectly.

If you can explain mean in layman's terms I may be able to comment. :dunno:

Thanks for the advice.

Is 650 cfm the correct one to buy for a mild 340?  I don't want to underestimate, but I don't want to over do it either.

NZ, did you purchase the typical fuel pump to carb lines that you would have purchased for your original carb, or did you have to get lines specially made to accommodate the new carb?

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware we used the stock fuel pump with stock lines.
The original carb came off and the new one went on, nothing needed to be changed.

I would like to answer that Neil but I honestly couldn't tell you. From what Adam and Dave my main resto mechanics say, it's a beautiful carb that is running as good as any. Is there better out there? Possibly. But this Eddy seems to be doing it's job, well, and from what I have seen others aren't too shabby either. I know you're a Holley man but the dark-side aren't all evil.

No carb should be assumed to be "right" out of the blox. I use pretty much all of them except Predators...lol. Holleys are born rich. Edelbrocks are born lean...lol. In most cases, I find more that the factory step up springs in the AFBs and AVSs Edelbrocks are wrong for the application because the cam is larger in most cases. If those are not matched to the cam's idle vaccum, the power circuit doesnt function like it should. I think a 650 version would be perfect. The factory AVS is rated at 625 IIRC, and all stock stuff will attach fine.

Yes, that is true. Every carb needs a tune out of the box. Wasn't meaning the phrase so directly.
Basically, in laymen's terms, it came out the box and was an absolute piece of pi$$ to put together. ;)

Where is the best place to buy a new AVS Thunder Series?  Do I need the throttle level adaptor?  Should I get the manual or electric choke model?  My car has no power brakes, steering, nothing.  Thanks for any tips.

Try Summit or Jegs, I'd go Summit, same parts, less money.
Not sure, we went with Electric choke and it works great.

Best of luck.
