Muffler choice
« on: May 23, 2007 - 06:59:02 PM »
My mufflers are loud...so much so I can't hear my radio with my windows rolled up :roflsmiley:  I currently have Flowmaster Super 40's and want some quieter mufflers.  I wouldn't be opposed to another flowmaster that was a bit quieter, the 440 doesn't need any help in sounding good :smilielol:

Cherry Bombs I like for a nostalgic reason. Probably why at 27 I am near def. I have had them on everything I've had with a V8.
I had a Magnaflow on a Stealth and it sounded good but I don't know how duals on a V8 would sound. Good probably.
I had a Duster I had glass packs on and rebuilt the engine, went with 3" Flows and the drone sound drove me nuts.
I may try Magnaflow or Spintechs on the engine I'm going with in the 'cuda.

I've always liked Dynomax Turbos personally.  They've got a nice sound, not too much resonance, and they make a nice round can that can be used in the proper place for ebody muflers without making them sound like some sort of hollow boat going down the road.

Flowmaster does have a few muffler choices if you want to quiet things down. I'm running Flowmaster 40's .. it's music to me....... but then I was in the band scene for years and my shop is next to a railroad switchyard. Hmmm I finally figured it out I'm deaf!  :smokin:

magnaflows for sure. Two chamber flowmasters give you that typical mustang 5.0 sound, not bad just a little too loud the older I get. Three chambers quiet it down a bit. Once I heard Magnaflows on a car I was sold. went from three chamber flowmasters to magnaflows, much quieter and deeper.

In my opinion flowmasters are over used and magnaflows are absolutely awesome.

I like the Dynamax on Lucy, sounds real nice, loud and agressive when you want it.
I wouldn't mind hearing an E-Body with Flowmasters in person though, I'm all for in your face aggression.

For the record, I didn't vote as there was no Dynomax.

It would be really cool if we could get a bunch of different recordings of different mufflers so that when someone is looking for one, they could listen to them first.

share a little bit of experience here....

I have the TTI Dynomax kit and it was too loud for me (ears would ache after a 20 minute drive) from the drone.   You could definatily here me start it up as well.   years of shooting and car stereo competitions and Im not deaf yet, nor do I want to be

A few weeks ago I put in some Vibrant 12" resonators between the mufflers and the tail-pipes.   They tamed the raspiness at full throttle and knocked the idle loudness down about 20%.   The drone at 2000RPM is still there though.

So....   Still looking for a better muffler.

What I'm looking for is not a real loud muffler, but a real DEEP muffler.  I've heard magnaflows do nice there but I don't know how magnaflows models go?

Flowmaster's web site had sound bites on all its different mufflers. Granted you can't do a cross brand comparison, but it will give you a chance to compare what the addition of length, volume, chambers and deflecters will do to the sound.

Do a search on YouTube.  There quite a few sound/video clips of mufflers on there.  Here's one of a 340 Challenger w/ Mangaflows:

Sounds like the same set up as me.
I used Dynomat and no drone, quiet as, it's almost too quiet as I'd prefer to hear more exhaust note.

For reference:

my Challengers underside is undercoated (rubberized) and the interior is lined (except for the glass) with a material of high density foam sandwiched between reflective metal liners (cabin insulation for temps and some sound) doubled up in some places.

the last couple thousand miles on longer trips Ive had to put an ear plug loosely in my left ear, else for the next day and a half, its like having a tincan over your ear.  Thats been my experience so far.

After I get done with the new heads and Six Pack install, if the exhaust note is still droning, Im going to switch mufflers to something else.

YMMV.
