440 6 pack. Possible to hook up air conditioning?
« on: May 25, 2007 - 05:59:36 PM »
Anybody know what would be required to get A/C on a 6 pack car? Does it require aftermarket kits or just some general tweaking?

I know for sure that 6 pack shaker AC cars didn't exist, not sure about non-shaker cars.

Thoughts?

You would have to run a new sanden compressor, because the stock one gets in the way. There were no 6 pack ac cars just like there were no ac shaker cars and no hemi ac cars

You can run it, you just have to trim back the filter baseplate to where it is inline with the filter itself. Basically it needs to be the same oval shape as the lid. My original 383 A/C  car was this way with a 440 six pack motor. Looked fine, cleared everything.

The big advantage to the sanden is it is more efficient and less horsepower robbing then the old stock ones, also they require no modification to the aircleaner assembly.

Cool, thanks for the info. Good to know it's as simple as using the right compressor! :2thumbs:

bouchillon performance has the stuff you need.

if you use a sanden, you likely wont have to cut up the 6pack baseplate.

on the bouchillon site, they have a pic of a cuda with Sanden installed, but not on a 6 pack.   on that picture the hose go and leave from the compressor leading in the direction of the Passenger side.   As opposed to a factory setup like my 70 challenger, where I have AC lines going to/from both fenders.   There are some 45*, 90* and 130* fittings that can hook up to the compressor.

Im about to start on my 440 6pack A/C setup next week and should be complete in the next month and Ill probably end up posting some pics of stuff.   I will be using as much of the original A/C setup as I can.

Robb

My sanden fits fine without cutting the base plate. My car was originally a factory air 340 car.  When I installed the big block I also installed the R134a conversion kit from Classic Auto Air.

that dual belt setup looks sweet - I didn't find any aftermarket solutions for SB so I custom fabricated my setup. Looking back, if I could have found a turn-key kit that had dual belts and no added idler pulley, I would have bought it in a heartbeat!!! Fabbing the brackets, juggling clearances, belt alignments, custom pulleys, allowing for belt tension adjustment, etc was quite a project

I just converted a 440 to a 6 pack & ity has the Sanden compressor in the front left corner , it needed a 1/4 notch to clear 1 bracket

I have also seen setups where the compressor is mounted down where the fuel pump is, though you will need to run an electric one.
