Best Undercoating?
« on: May 27, 2007 - 08:56:38 PM »
I'll be mediablasting my car soon and I was debating whether or not I should blast the undercarraige. I don't think I have any rust problems under there, but I was wondering if theres anything better than the original undercoating or maybe something you guys use that gives the car a cleaner look. Rustbullet, Por 15, just body paint, any pros and cons with any of these, etc. Any tips on removing the undercoating would be appreciated as well (assuming removing the undercoating is the correct action to take).

Thanks

That's a good question.  :grinyes:

It depends on how far you want to go with your resto. If you are looking for a trophy winner, then all will have to look good, and that(the original under-coating) will have to go. If you just want a nice cruiser, then judge by how your rear quarter panels, and front fenders look. Are they rusted much? Take a look at your frame. If you see rust there also, then maybe stripping everything is the way to go. If there isn't any rust in the above places, then I'm sure your floor is all good to go. In that case, it's a matter of appearance. Do you want it all clean looking, or just the outside? I hope I didn't confuse you more.  :pullinghair:

I like the clean look of a painted underside.  Only downside is maintaining it and that makes it not too ideal for a out all the time cruiser.
Maybe have the bottom Rhino lined in your cars color, that would be pretty cool.  Just don't line outside the body seam on the underside.

The best undercoating is the boxliner coating they use on pick ups (the spray on)

Sandblast the undercarriage. Sweep and blow all the sand out of the channels. Spray on Chassis Saver Satin black. Only undercoat the wheel wells. Chip resistant and leaves the underside very clean looking. Looks clean for show purposes and can be driven daily with out and worry of stone chips.

Ive seen stuff thats thin and stuff that looks almost like undercoating... I like the thinner stuff, so its more smooth.  I wouldnt know where to go, I used stuff from Carquest, forget the brand.
