Anyone Seen These? "Factory Painted Top"?
« on: May 29, 2007 - 07:10:20 AM »

I have never heard of this option before if indeed it is an "option". Sounds rare, I haven't "seen it all" before but I've seen my fair share and this is the first I've seen or heard of this. It's an advert on Moparts and the guy states it's a, and I quote: "Sublime 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T U code 440 4 speed car with a factory black painted top".

"Factory black painted top"? :sly:

Yep Carl, there was a red T/A in Mopar Muscle a month back or so that was like one of two with a painted black top.  Barry knows about that one, that was the article with his name in it.   :2thumbs:

Cheers guys, I'll look into it later. Quite a unique option, not sure if I like it myself though.
To the untrained car enthusiast it could very easily pass as "unfinished" still, cool to know.

Yes it's legit, its called two-tone paint and is coded as 'V02' on the fender tag and build sheet. Here are two more; the '71 'Cuda is a 440+6 with GY9 Tawny-Gold/GY8 Gold-Leaf Poly combo and the '70 is EF8/FF4 and is on E-Gag right now...

I have heard of that option before, yet have never seen one in person.  I wouldn't mind having one being that they are on the rare side!

It must have been a really rare option.  You sure don't hear about many of them.  I had a '62 Belvedere with that option once, white with a blue top.  I thought it was a sharp looking car.

Expensive. Easily a $5.60 extra cost option.  :smilielol:

It came with the vinyl top moldings to separate the colors, too.

Unique? No. Lots of 50's and 60's cars had them. Rare on Mopars? Yes. Cool? Umm, sorry, no offence to anyone, but IMHO, they look very uncool. I would never buy one for myself. I used to think vinyl tops were uncool too, they are starting to grow on me, but it's not like a have to have one either. Still think a painted hardtop is still the slickest, and coolest looking (but I do agree with the comment above about the green Cuda, that does suit the car and looks awesome).  :2cents:
