72 charcoal canister question
« on: May 31, 2007 - 04:58:43 AM »
Does anyone know exactly how they hook up to the carb or have a picture from a shop manual? It is a 72 Road Runner with a 400 auto and correct carb.I assume all 72s would be the same.I have a 73 shop manual but a 73 is different.

It looks to be pretty simple but there wasn't enough vacuum for the PCV to work.It looks like the only vacuum to the canister is from the dist.I attached the carb bowl line to the larger port out of the right side of the carb but it doesn't have vacuum.

At this point I have blocked off the PCV from the canister and attached the PCV to the large port on the front of the carb .I do have a smaller port on the rear of the carb that isn't being used.I want the canister set up to look correct but at this point the car runs poorly.I am not sure the canister is my problem but most likely it is.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,Dave

I think one of the lines to the canister connects to a purge line from your fuel tank. Am pretty sure there is a good illustration on this site somewhere if it hasnt been deleted  :dunno:

hope this helps. From the 72 manual, there is an image labeled "california" but they don't provide another for the federal models.

Thanks, the picture does help.Do you have a picture of the carb showing the vacuum ports?

Year one used to have canister but they were 73/74.
