Air shocks make a difference..

After I put air shocks on, now she's got some rake!

Still gotta fix those pizza cutters on the back though...   :lol:

Only bad is they can beat up the crossmember, so just keep an eye on things!

I got a set from 1972challengerorange and might put them on later.
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Yep, I know.  I drive it to town and back, rarely more than 20 minutes at a time.  I will keep my eye on it, thanks for the heads up.   :2thumbs:

  I went the air-shock route for a year or so too. I think I had 80 PSI in mine. I eventually went with Espo leaf springs with 2" more than stock height. Yes, changing leaf springs isn't fun, but the car does ride nicer now.

I have air shocks in mine, but I don't like them. If I put more than 18-20 psi in them, the car rides like a tank. And they leak somewhere so I'm constantly adding air. How do they beat up the crossmember?

Instead of all of the weight on the springs, now, most of the weight is on the shock.  Over time, (depending on how rough you get with it,) the shock crossmember may get damaged from the weight of the car. 

I dont mind it riding like a tank, if I was worried about ride quality, I would have bought a Buick.   :lol:

Yup, i rode them for a short while, while i saved up for SS springs when i bought tires that were too big  :lol:. They worked okay, ran like a tank, the shock towers taking that beating did worry me  :eek4:

275X60X15's will fit and fill the rear wheel wells great. That is what I have on both of my cars.

I tried air for a while and it was to rough for me, I switched over to shocks with coil springs on them and they are a little smoother and still give you the height you are looking for.

Good temporary fix.

How about loweirng the front 1" to give some rake?

I'd definitely would get new springs w/some arch.  I hate Challengers w/the arse dragging rake.  Like old Mustangs.

I never had air shocks on mine, but who knows about the previous owner. 

The original leafs were frozen, rock solid.  I had replaced the shocks (with Monroe Gas-matics if I remember correctly) and was saving up for new springs, when one day the shock crossmember came completely loose; one end had a crack/tear in it but basically it broke the welds.

I ran with no crossmember or shocks for a few weeks till I could get my Uncle Harry to weld the damage up; I bolted the crossmember back into place and put in the Super Stock springs that are still in the car.  No trouble with the rear suspension since then, and it rode pretty nicely too.

Springs are springs are springs, whether they are coiled, bars or leafs. They all basically react the same way and ultimatly determine the majority of the suspension behavior. However, how the car transistions through the variety of motions and the rate and reaction of those transitions is where shock absorbers make a HUGE impact and are typically underrated by most enthusiasts as a modification to pursue.I beleive a big reason why a lot of guys think coil overs are such a hot ticket are because of the $200 each shocks that come in the kit that are matched to the spring rates. Put this good a shock under the stock suspension and you will get similar results.

What I'm getting at is while air shocks may be an acceptable bridge to getting your car where you want it to be, don't ever expect them to do much more than keep your rear in the air. They are not a true performance part and they could cause you more grief in the long haul, as others have pointed out. Ultimatly, your usage will determine how your mileage varies with their use.

BTW, I like the look and think you do need more rubber now.

Again guys, Im not looking for performance here.  I dont race, drag, anything like that.  I barely drive it.  I think I've driven it 3 miles in the past two weeks.  If I wanted performance I definitely wouldntve blown the $60 on these. 

Someday, yes it will have better suspension.  Today is not that day.   :grinno:
