Correct Date Coded 440 Block
« on: May 31, 2007 - 01:56:23 PM »
I found a 440 block that I was trying to buy.  It was assembled on 12-03-69 and my Challenger was built on 12-16-69.  The guy wanted $250 for it ($300) with the main caps and had to be picked up/would not ship.  I told him I would take it and pick it up, and then he said it had been sold locally.  I'm about 600 miles away.  I asked him to ask the new owner if it is for sale, and the reply is $500.  Is it worth paying this much for a bare block that so closely matches the build date of my car but still not the original engine.  What are the chances of finding another so closely date matching, since my original engine was removed in the '70s and probably never will be found.  Thanks for any advice!

That's up to you really......It won't get you any more money down the road if you had to sell it just because it has the same year motor as the car.  If it's not a numbers matching motor, it's not, regardless of the year.  Depending on where you are, you can find another motor in that year, it just depends of your patient enough to wait.  I finally found a 73 440 for my 73 cuda after looking since October of 06.  Just a personal thing I guess, but that's just my  :2cents:.

I responded to your other post about this. Do you even know this is a good block, and not cracked? I wouldn't go above $500 for it.

Thanks for the input guys!  I have a 08-19-69 440 engine in it now.   I believe its the second engine and been in there since the original was probably replaced in the 70s.  Its an  HP .060 over that runs and sounds good.  Still dreaming of getting that 221748 VIN original though!!!  thanks again!! :bananasmi

Roger,
if you are still looking you will find one as I found a date correct 383 HP complete motor a couple months ago fro my car!

You need an HP block so if that one is not don't worry......Moparts has a lot of blocks advertised as well as here and watch e-bay....you will find one as time is on your side...

good luck, Stuart
