Hemi Challenger Convertible--Why Not?
« on: June 01, 2007 - 08:48:13 PM »
This may have been touched on before, but why did the Dodge boys decide to....

1-Not offer a factory hemi Challenger convertible in '70 and '71....

 2-Not offer an R/T convertible in '71...

3-And finally, offer only a 318 or 340 on '72, '73, and '74 models even though cars like the Charger still offered a 440 in '72...

Been wondering about this stuff for a while and never really seen the answers...

Thanks In Advance

You could get a 70 Hemi Challenger Convertible but no '71.

I have read that , in regards to question # 2, the answer is the extremely poor sales of 1970 RT convertibles. Govier's book shows a total of 1070 RT convertibles for 1970.

Altho I've seen different production figures depending where you check... It just make our cars more rare!  :money:  :2thumbs:

Yep, you're right about that. It seems when it comes to Mopars, there's all sorts of different facts and figures floating around out there. You're right, though, about the rarity part - gotta love that!

Wade has a real 71 convertible hemi but it is the red one, not the yellow one, that yellow one has a 528 crate hemi and was a 318 car originally.

Mostly because the chargers and roadrunners equipped with 440s didnt sell particularly, and were only available with automatic (in '73 & '74 atleast). Also dodge was trying to turn the image of the challenger more into that of a personal luxury car than a high performance drag-monster.

I always thought the later cars had small blocks because of new emissions regulations.

Charger in '72 needed a 440 to push its 10,000 lb weight.
