Am I missing something?
« on: June 02, 2007 - 12:21:47 AM »
Whenever I park my car in the garage after a drive the garage reeks of gasoline. is this normal for a six-pak car?
Off-gassing? I can't see any leaks anywhere.
As I stated in another thread it has the following new fuel related items:
New:
Gas tank
sending unit
fuel/vapor lines (3 since it's a Ca. Car)
fuel filter
fuel canister
fuel pump
expertly rebuilt/tuned carbs (ace fuel systems in Santa Clara)

Is there a trick to finding the source of the fumes?
p.s. she runs great :burnout: but she's stinkin' up my wife's laundry room ;D

Could it be the gas cap?

Could it be the gas cap?

i don't know of course how strong those fumes are, but that could be potentally dangerous. A water heater pilot could really change that luandry room and your car in a flash.

I have one of those original locking gas caps. I'll have to take a look at the gasket. Thanks for the idea

TC...yeah I've thought about the water heater. Luckily my W.H.'s pilot is 10' above the floor.

and I don't waste the mexican effect in my garage

well it's not the cap. Rubber is thick and squishy on the cap and I added the rubber cup to the flip top cap so it pushes on it too.

funny the cap doesn't smell like gas and I can hardly smell gas putting the snoz right into the filler neck opening.

Any other ideas? :dunno:

Is there such a thing as an electronic gas sensor or ? Like freon sensors etc...

Something besides a lit match :smokin:

I cigarette lighter would help you find the source, but it might be best to take a safer route.   lol    :smilielol:

My car does the same thing and I know where the fumes come from on mine.  Yours might be a similar situation, so here goes.  The first is my fuel tank has 2 vents to the atmoshpere.  I think you said that yours was sealed.  Also, carbs have vents in the bowls to allow for fuel to flow on demand and not have to be "sucked" into the engine.  I have 2 carbs that are vented, and this creates a nice "aroma" in my garage. To check and see if it is the carbs, pull the lower bowl screws and drain the bowls. Then re-install them and dry up any spilled gas. Ventilate your garage well and then check it in the morning.  If the smell in diminished or gone, then the carb vents are doing their thing and you have no worries other than the smell..  Just my 0.02....        :cooldancing:

A smog machine has a sniffer and can count hydrocarbons. They should be able to use that seeing it the numbers go up or down as they get closer or further to the source where its venting strong from.

do you have a 1215 intake gasket ?
I bet the center carb is boiling dry from the heat in the heat crossover , get it blocked off

I'm assuming a 1215 is a stock type gasket. If so, these cars had this boiling problem when new?
Or it's the new gas is different than the '70's gas problem....?

the 1215 is a performance gasket with the heat crossover port blocked to keep the intake cool , you no longer need the heat to prevent carb icing ... I doubt you take the car out on cold days anymore
