    I used to hold the choke open with a clothes pin , you'll just have to pump the gas a few more times to get her fired up

    Just keep it open for now. You may have to "play" with the pedal a bit till it warms up. Its warm enough in most places except maybe Alberta  :roflsmiley: Sorry Chryco...

    ok, so the car is running better with the choke wired open, but when i come to a stop it surges and wants to die. also, if i run regular or midgrade unleaded the car deisles when i shut her down, doesnt ping at all, but deisles.  :feedback:

    Just curious, not that it has to do with anything, but what is your compression ratio?

    Try switching to a different brand of gas and see if it helps.  Do you need to run premium all the time?  If your compression ratio is high, you may need the premium fuel.

    As far as the dieseling, to stop it you can give it a little gas when this happens to kill the engine.

    What tac said.. Retune now with the choke open. Reset idle speed and mixture after timing is set. It should cure both.

    10:1 compression. i used to run regular before i swapped cams and then once i put in a new cam it started dieseling. My idle speed is pretty low, seems too low when i am in gear

    What is your timing set at? You may be just that..Idling too low, or have timing retarded.

    Well, i just checked my gas mileage with the new carb and hold on to your seats, i went from 9.7 MPG with the 440 carb to 15.1 MPG with the factory 383 carb. I love saving money at the pump!!!!  :bigsmile:

    Base initial timing should be set to 10-12° if you have no clue what the engine is built with. If it will start and doesnt ping that way, you could add more. I think the base factory spec was 8°. In any case, add the timing, then reset the carb. Then swap back the 440 carb, and see what it can really do.
