Lucy In B5-Blue!
« on: June 06, 2007 - 05:38:51 AM »

Hey guys, I got an email a few weeks back from one of the previous owners of my Challenger. His name is Julian from around the Christchurch area (South Island) and he's right into the hobby, more so in his younger days. He seems to know many people in the circle. After viewing my nz440rt.com website he emailed me asking if it was the same car, running off it's list of options and he quoted the number plate too. Anyhow, we had a lengthy discussion over the phone about the car, previous owners and who painted it white, added the spoiler, drag racing.

She was a very well known car when she arrived, no one knew what it was. Anyhow, he wasn't the best with computers and finally got 3 historic photos through to me. I'll be adding them to my personal website, was real awesome to see these photos, first time I have seen her in her factory correct B5-Blue paint. Nice colour but just not to my tastes. So, I have now talked to the original importer, several of the owners and know her history very, very, well now. The photos aren't the best but what do you expect for 1973?  Sign writing are decals.

1st Photo =  1973 13.9 @ 108MPH Smokey Hollow Dragway.
2nd Photo = 1973 Outside a friends of the owners house.
3rd Photo = 1975 Levels Speedway.

He said he had the Challenger up to 148mph in top gear and it was red lining. That is good info to know, he said it wouldn't pull any harder and that was when she had 3.55:1 rear gears. This was on a track of course. The number plates are the same as the ones on her now, blocked out for security reasons, it's 101% her. Lucy was painted Alphine White and had the rear wing added by the 5th owner in 1978 or 1979.

Thanks guys, too kind. I'm very proud to have done the research, made the calls and been lucky enough to have people email me photos of the car 15, 20 or 30+ years ago. Very awesome to piece her life together, I don't think there is much more I could find out about her. All the major questions and "puzzles" have been answered.

Mike: You'd be more than welcome to come view the car if you jump the ditch. Go for a drive etc, be cool.

Thanks Eric, that she has!  :2thumbs: I noticed looking at the photos when I got them that she came with bumperettes, pretty cool. They weren't on her when I got it. She would have been a nice car to restore factory correct but, oh well, I made her my way. Besides, I have the column shift and all parts needed to go back to 100% factory correct and of course the #'s 440 and 727 still reside in her to this day.

Thanks mate, much appreciated. The only thing I guess I haven't found yet is her buildsheet. If she had one it went with the original bucket seats when someone changed her over to a bench seat car back in 1970 or 1971, it was very, very early on as the first owner in NZ and Julian said it had a bench seat when they had it. Though, the car was built in LA and from what I've seen & read the chances of her having one from factory were slim to none (I think).

Also, how about that time!! 13.90 @ 108mph in 1973 is fantastic, all stock with street tires.
To think NHRA top fuelers were probably doing 6 second passes+ this is a great time.  :clapping:

Here are the others I have of her. All in 1985 to 1986.

You drunk Eric? :smilielol: I guess, it's definitely not as bad as when I first laid eyes on it.
Though, the trunk lines and rear end on Challengers (and 'Cudas) are yum!
