Electronic Ignitions
« on: June 07, 2007 - 02:20:57 PM »
OK, got pretty much the whole build narrowed down (finaly), trying to focus in on the ignition now.... It has the original single point distributor in it at the moment, and everything looks to be ok. Now, would it be a better idea to convert to electronic ignition, or leave the points in there? The cam is the Lunati VooDoo summit racing part # LUN-60302LK and with the prior mentioned head work, plus forged pistons and such. Anyhow, my old Charger with the 440, I had put on the Mopar Performance conv. kit with orange box, a lot better than the worn out, and somewhat bent, points setup dist that was in it...... So, what would be the choice? This car will be mostly street, if any track at all....

Also on a side note, so this way I don't start other topic, or drag up an aold one, piston rings I saw these: Total Seal rings, that claim they can provide something like an additional 5 plus more inches of vacuum? It might be the Max seal rings, but I was wondering, one if it's these for sure, two what are the pros -vs- cons of these rings? Since this is a street car, and will be using power brakes, vacuum secondaries, and vacuum advanced, plus whatever else maybe vacuum operated, I'd like for this motor to create some vacuum, that's one reason why I didn't go to big on cam, and stuck with the VooDoo b/c they advertise "more vacuum" due to the design, I've also heard of this too from other sources other that factory....

In answer to your question about which kit... They all come with a different price. Is that a factor? The Mopar kit is fine, but from what I have heard, go with the chrome box over the orange one that is made in China now. I think any kit will be a step up over a point style ignition.  :2cents:

I voted for accel since that is what I was using. The MP kit would work fine, if you want to upgrade, the chrome box is good, or if you want to go a step further, you can use the MP distributor to fire an MSD/Accel/Mallory multispark ignition setup.

I prefer factory dual points on my original hp type cars and msd 7al on my race cars :2thumbs:

Had the mallory unilites fly apart with big stall speeds and quick rpms.  Chrysler electronics are very good when you match the right parts

I didn't vote for one cause I don't know. Nikki came with thr Mopar orange box that says made in USA... but if you look at the transistor it says made in Mexico..  :clueless:

I have used most of them , I have seen a # of MSD blow up , I like the Mopar Perf system , simple & cost effective but no Rev limiter
if you want a Rev limiter The Crane works well for 1/2 the cost of the MSD & has dials not expensive chips to limit the rev limiter

:iagree: Unless you need spark for a nitro burning Top Fueler, you can't beat the good ol' MP unit.

One of my race cars has had a Jacobs Omni Pack and was later switched to an MSD Digital 6. No appreciable difference in e.t. or trap speeds between the two. Cold and hot start up was the same as well. Never tried Crane any thing. I've only ever used Mallory and Accel wires and coils, never their ignition systems.

Don at FBO has a setup also. I changed out my orange box, Accel coil, ballest resistor, cap, and rotor along with a recurve on the Chysler electronic ignition distributor. All for about $200. This system made a BIG differance in power and response.

FWIW, I've been running Jacobs ignitions for 20 yrs and never had any problems with them. Both of my challengers have  Jacobs ignitions triggered off the factory dist. I believe all mentioned above will work good, just depends on weather you need a rev limiter or not.

I don't think I'll be needing a rev limiter, hope not at least. As I had said, I'm not really planning on putting the car on the strip, heck the door sticker weighs the car in over 5k if I remember right :22yikes:. Also, yet another question about ignitions, anyone got any info on the Pertonix kit?

Also, any information on those piston rings listed above?

I have the MP kit in my 71 Challenger RT and I'm running the Pertronix kit in my 70 340 Cuda so no one can tell it's not runnig points. It works great but you can't go get a rotor if you need one at your local parts store. My Challenger has had the same MP set up in it as when I bought it in Feb. of 1989 and has never had a problem. I'm running the chrome box but painted it black to look like a stock one. The Pertronix kit was only about $55.00 and was a great way to hide the electronic ignition from most people.
