#$%@* cursed transmission!
« on: June 10, 2007 - 04:52:30 PM »
I am really beginning to think I have a cursed transmission as the damn thing keeps finding a way not to work right.Latest issue was driving home from the track last week and shifting up into second it starts making grinding/chattering noises.I pull over and shift back into first and it seems ok so I pull out and try again and still grinding.I shift to thrid and it gets better and seeing I`m only 1 mile from away I nurse it home.Turns out the retainer for the rear low reverse servo popped out past the snap ring.Supposedly fairly common with increased line pressures and such in a modified unit.A guy on Moparts has extra thick stainless ones which I am going to order but I`m sure this trans will find some other way to aggravate me.Three times it came out in my `72 for problems, three times in the `69 and now this which luckily can be fixed in the car.Maybe someone who owned or worked on it had something bad happen in the past and it`s cursed forever!  :pullinghair:

Sorry, I can't help with your question but I was just curious, is this your TF-727 or 4-Speed?

TF 727   Used to be in my `72 but I swapped that to a four speed and then used the 727 in the `69.I should have given it to my boss for his boat-would have made a better anchor than a transmission!  :roflsmiley:

My fix to that problems is I press two retainers inside one another on the press. It makes them double thick. One thing that aggravates that problem is the rear band adjustment being set looser then it has to be,the more the servo moves to apply the band, the more spring tension gets put on the retainer. Believe it or not, higher line pressure has nothing to do with it,the retainer only sees mechanical spring tension on it,not hydraulic pressure. Most good shift kits give you a stiffer spring to put on the servo to get the low band off quicker, that's the #1 reason to push the retainer out! :grinyes:

Note: You can fix it in the car if it didn't hurt the band.

torred, this is what I was talking about:
Take two stock retainers and press them inside one another.
Sometimes you have to lightly grind it alittle bit to make room for the snap ring to go in.
Adjust band to the bottom end on specs.

My buddy is trying to machine a thicker one from solid bar stock but if he doesn`t come thru I have a spare to do the double up.  :2thumbs:
