Help - Need A New Parts Supplier!!
« on: June 12, 2007 - 08:50:29 PM »

Hey guys, I am no longer going to buy my parts from Year One. Reason and only reason being their shipping rates have risen and the only option to New Zealand is the most expensive UPS option available. See below. Anyhow, I need a new supplier where I can get good quality items from interior to exterior all at the one shop. eBay sells most of the same items but when you have to get 10+ items from different sellers it becomes expensive and worse yet, very messy.

Couple of days back I made a little order for some misc small parts (basically to pass some time). I needed dust boots and grabbed some spare items for Dad while I was there. I emailed Mike @ YO and asked if everything was in stock and ready to ship. To my shock, here is the shipping and in stock quote, check the shipping price out lol. Followed by that is Mike's email (in red) reply to my shock of the shipping price and cancellation of my order.

Hi Carl,

Unfortunately, the U.S. Postal Service has changed their guidelines. Very few shipments still qualify. I will have to send these parts via UPS.  Yes, UPS is getting more and more expensive.  As fuel prices surge over here (just beginning to see prices that are common in Europe, Asia, and Australia), so does the cost of shipping.  One such example is the change in services offered.  UPS used to offer two different methods of shipping to New Zealand.  UPS Expedited was the standard method and least expensive.  UPS Express was a faster, more expensive, option.  Under their new guidelines, UPS Saver (between Expedited and Express) is the only method available for New Zealand.

There are a couple of options you may want to consider.  Our shipping rate is a fraction of the advertised UPS rate, because we have made an exclusive agreement with them.  The total shipping cost on any given order also includes a nominal handling fee to cover warehouse expenses.  We can still ship with DHL or FedEx if it is not billed to us though.  In other words, if you have an account with one of the other major carriers, we can schedule them to pick-up the shipment and bill you directly on your account.  In that case, we would only charge the handling fee.  The handling fee is a minimum $10.00 for any order under $200.  On orders over $200, we charge $5.00 for every hundred dollars in product.

You are a wonderful customer, Carl.  Beyond that, it is a pleasure chatting with you outside of orders for all these years.  I would not like to lose your business, but my hands are tied pretty tight when it comes to shipping.  There is little I can do, though I try.  I will cancel the order(s) if you do not have a shipping account that you would like to use.  Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Best regards,

Michael Lancaster

I said I will no longer be shopping at YO and wished Mike all the best. There is no way I'll be paying twice the amount of my parts order on shipping, who in their right mind would? I always knew they were somewhat expensive but this was basically the final straw for me. You can find the same parts on eBay for 3/4's the price and 1/4 the price shipping. YO is good, no doubt, but, with shipping prices like this they will quickly lose sales downunder, like myself with some 45+ orders (most large) under my belt.

Thanks mate, I've only been with them because they get the goods here fast (you pay for it) and more importantly if anything is wrong I can send it back no hassle and money back. For International customers it's more peace of mind that anything else, knowing your order will be correct, in one piece and arrive in good time is what I paid for, but, I won't be paying what they are now asking, that's for sure! :eek7: I checked out Dantes but his selection isn't the best, Jimsautoparts can go jump ship and Paddocks don't ship worldwide. Looks like my eBay feedback my climb....lol

Not defending them or taking their side, but man, I always ship via the Post Office.   They recently redid their calculations, and if you use boxes outside the size and shape of their available free priority boxes or flat rate boxes I would say the rates have went up at least 50 percent.   I have sold alot of parts on ebay, and pretty much could guess within a buck or two of what shipping would be.   Well, that definately isn't the case anymore!!!   Gal at the post office said their new program now mimics Fedex and UPS.

USPS might be ok in the US but they suck when shipping to Canada.  Most vendors won't ship with them ie YO.  I doubt service to NZ would be any better.  I would ship via DHL, Fedex, Purolator, etc. but you will need to get an account with a customs broker.  The bigger the value of the shipment the lower the fees will be (as a % of the value).  If you ship enough stuff you might be able to use a freight forwarder who will gather the various purchases and ship them together.  Perhaps someone you know can do this for you.

Thanks lads.

Matt - I could get them shipped in a container with other peoples parts but I'm kind of anal and usually pay for express or likewise to get my parts here quick smart and in my possession rather than down at a wharf in Mexico or something for 3 years lol. But, for big items ie: engine, trans, k-members etc it can be the way to go, just not for me.

Instead of multiple small orders, you should wait until you have more (and critically important) items to make it worth your while.

You could also start finding some friends locally, and pool your orders together into one to split the cost of shipping.

International shipping is expensive, but I guess it beats walking/swimming.    :dunno:

Carl, Is there no-one in NZ that is bringing in E-body stuff.  We have a couple of options here in Oz although a lot of them source through the one place in Melbourne (ELKO/Dodge City).  Sure they are adding their mark up on top of the shipping to Oz but they are at least doing it by container and might be keeping costs down.  I have been buying off them for a while and they have been looking after me pretty well.  Of course freight back to NZ will add another dimension but might be worth a comparative quote at least??  Cheers, Mark.

p.s.  When I was building up my Jeep, one of the guys also imported boats from the US and offered to include stuff in his container.  Maybe you could network with someone local that imports and strike a deal?

Thanks guys, importing in a container isn't really what I want to do. I'd rather door to door for peace of mind.
I have been ordering from Ray in Aussie @ Pentastar parts, great service with quite a few parts. It's probably my leading option at the moment. I'll look around but definitely won't do the container thing, just preference.

we are starting to ship alot of parts over to canada and over seas. Email me with a parts list and i'll see what i can help you with, Postage or shipping is and always will be an issue, They have all gone to dimensional weight not actual weight and actual size like they use to which is a major expense increase. USPS, UPS, DHL, FEDEX we use them all to help save on shipping costs. We generally take our shipping quotes and add 10% for recalculations on there end so we stay close to actuall billing and not get burned. Shipping out of the US is and always will be expensive. We have a large selection of E-Body sheetmetal from goodmark as a distributor and I also work for A Chrysler dealership for the OE and performance parts. I am set up with a few other vendors to get restoration parts from. you can visit our ebay store at rosevilleautomotive67 and email direct at parts@mikeriehls.com  we do not have our web online store up yet . I'll try to help out any mopar fan in need if I can.

Thanks Mopar Dave, that sounds really good. I'll definitely check out your eBay page and once I get the Cudas parts list sorted send it through to you and see where you can help me out. Thus far, off the top of my head, I know I need: All new interior from carpet to headliner in black. I might end up getting that from Legendary though unless you supply their goods? What else, ah, reproduction tuff wheel, 4-Speed reverse light, pedal bezels.

Hi Carl,

The recent postal rate increase was crazy. They did it over a weekend I was selling a nice set of 70 440 valve covers to a guy in Sweden and the rate went up by $20.00 in one day.

If I ever make it out to NZ I'll make sure to let you know and I'll back an extra bag with parts. In exchange you have to paint your 71 Cuda Panther Pink and not black like mine.... :roflsmiley:

:smilielol: LOL! I tell you what, I'll do you a fair deal. You bring the bag of parts and I'll paint my 'Cuda black? If you do get down to New Zealand be sure to let me know. Come see Lucy and I and I'll take you out for some lunch and a few colds at the local (my shout of course). You know, we're going to be twins with 2 identical cars (pretty much) that's weird!  :sly:

:canada: :aarg: YO can put it wher the sun don't shine. They tell me to use Canadian Dealers they have an arrangement with. They say they have the parts. My last order 7 weeks and a $65 item picked up at their so called dealer was $158. The parts were junk! They told me to return them to the dealer and for $102 they would return them, if YO credits them, they would credit me $65. I am told this is the costs of freight to Canada. Their dealer in Canada is Unlimited Performance. I would like to get in on this game, but i dont think i've got the BALLS to do this to fellow Mopor or guys like us. All we want is a fair shake.
