Why the engine smoke after a rebuild?
« on: June 15, 2007 - 01:06:06 PM »
Looking for some feedback here...
I pulled the hemi out of my Cuda last January, as it was smoking blue. In a nutshell, all tolerances and measurements were good...the only thing they found was 2 cracked rings.  So after replacing the rings, all bearings and polishing the heads, we reassembled the engine.  After 2 hours on the dyno, it still smokes (mostly out of the drivers side) when you let off of a moderate to hard accelleration.   Any ideas? Thanks.

Hemis are known for intake leaks. Crate hemis with that are much more common. What was the finish on the cylinder bores? Your dyno operator should have set the brake at a medium load, and let the engine pull against it for about 30 minutes to seat the rings. If the cam was broken in with no load, or the engine was simply fired and pulled because the cam was reused, the rings may not have seated fully yet. They should seat in about 30-40 miles of load type driving with the normal way-too-rough bore finish most places use. When things are right, the rings will fully seat in about 5 minutes.

Here is what I was just told...

Apparently, the gasket is (was) too thick.  Now they are going to machine off 18-20/1000 of the manifold and hope that does it.

Rings are seated and okay...it was that intake gap-shaving it down did the trick.
