How far can you go on a 340?
« on: June 18, 2007 - 09:03:32 PM »
What's the most cubic inches you can get out of a 340? How far can you punch it out? Is there any type of stroker kit available?

I think 408 is as big as you want to go. Check out 440source.com
72 Cuda, owned 25 years. 496, with ported Stage VI heads, .625 in solid roller, 254/258 at .050, 3500 stall, 3.91 rear. 850 Holley DP, Reverse manual valve body.

1999 Trans Am, LS1, heads, cam, headers, stall, etc! Love to surprise the rice rockets with this one. They seem so confident, then it's "what the heck just happened?"

A 340 goes to 416 with a 4 inch stroke and a 0.030 overbore.  I've heard 500 hp is the limit with a stock block so more displacement would just help you exceed the blocks limits.  I met a guy at our Mopar meet who had the R3 race block and went with a bigger stroke resulting in about 468 ci if I remember correctly.  It was a custom crank and pistons.  He said his motor cost $20K.  He runs 10.5.

Mopar now offers a 440 small block that utilizes their new 340 resto block.

You can meet all your needs with a properly built 416". That is unless your needs call for an R3 race block.
So, clearly you can get total self destructing cubes out of the engine, but what do want to do with it?
If you want to build it to the most c.i.d. then start with a race block. If you want to build it for max effort race then start with a race block. If you want a damn fine little screamer that can get you some low E.T.'s and not have a melt down backing out of the garage then get yourself a 4" crank and stoker pistons, bore it over .030 or .060. and invest in some good heads.

I was talking with a guy at our Mopar club who has a 461 cubed small block (340).  It is not an R3 block and he has run 9.74 in a 68/9 Cuda.  It has a 4 5/16" stroker crank.  Everything is custom built and he spent big $$$.  As far as I know. a 4" stroke is the biggest off the shelf stroker crank.

Hughes Engines has a 426" Kit that has a longer stroke. I don't know what it is but he has them ready to ship. Also, does 440source do small block kits? I didn't think they did LA.
