Rev Limiter
« on: June 19, 2007 - 09:13:40 PM »
I'm running a MSD 6A ignition with billet distributer. Can I add a rev limiter to this set up, or would it be better to upgrade to the 6AL?
Dave

I have the 6AL and billet dist. I suppose it would come down to cost to buy a rev limiter to add on, verses a new 6AL box.
Either way, in my opinion, the rev limiter is a must have. Good luck.

How do you add a rev limiter per-se? I wouldn't mind getting stuck into the Hemi but like any stick shift you run the trouble of getting stuck between N or missing a gear and I'd like to have the peace of mind knowing that if I F#$k up a shift the damage will be nil and the rpms will be fine. How do you set the rpm limit? Kind of like you would with a tach or something? I'd probably set mine to around 6-7K? Not sure. Very interested though. Any links to good "rev limiters"?

Think I saw some in Summit in the ignition section.

MSD does sell the rev limiter as a stand alone unit with wiring diagrams to work with virtually anything for under $100 but then you still have to buy the chip packs if you want anything other than 5000 or 6000 limit

I recently purchased and installed an MSD limiter that works with the Chrysler electronic ignition. I has plug-in's for 4k,6k,7k, & 8000 RPM. The 4000 is for testing the unit I assume. So far all I get is a miss around that RPM which can be driven thru to a higher RPM. Really don't have the confidence in the system to install and try out the 6000 plug-in. MSD support has been helpful and I suspect my wiring is not putting out the correct voltage. As it stands right now I cannot trust my motor to this rev limiter  so it is disconnected.

This the one I am going to use. It has dials not chips,a two step rev control, cranking retard and a high RPM retard for NOs or a high compression engine. I have used it before and it worked great!

I don't think the Crane is a "two step" rev limiter. (staging RPM rev limiter and max RPM rev limiter) :dunno:

Terry, if I buy that, how do I know it will work with my Hemi?  I just want something that will limit the 540. I will talk to Tim the engine builder about it to see what is the ideal rpm for "cutoff"? but if I buy that box, what else would I need to run it, just the box?

Thanks, hope they made sense.
