Motor is home!
« on: June 22, 2007 - 06:50:37 PM »
Well, a little over a year later, the motor for my car is home.  I am not complaining about the wait, since if I had it earlier, I will wouldn't be any closer to the car being finished.  However, it had definitely lit a fire in me.  After getting it home I installed a Billet Specialties serpentine kit and ran into an expected issue with the crank pulley.  Because of the ATI damper, it sticks out about 1/4 inch too far.  So, I am going to look into having it machined down.  If that won't work, guess I will have to get a custom pulley made.

The motor was built by Mopar Engines West (MEW).  It is a Keith Black aluminum street block, Stage V aluminum heads, Stage V intake, custom hydraulic roller Comp Cam camshaft, Eagle connecting rods, Diamond pistons, dual Fast throttle bodies, 65lb injectors, harnesses, sensors, and computer.
After they tuned it, broke it in, and dyno'd it, the 572 cubic inches peaked out with 702hp at 6200 and 634 ft/lbs at 5500 all on pump gas.  The torque is pretty flat above 600 ft/lbs through the rpm range and only drops to 595 ft/lbs right at 6200.

MEW has been really great to work with.  We ran into some issues along the way, but in no way can I fault them.

Now, I just need to get the motor in the car...  :faint:

That is so awesome!  :wow:

Do you know the weight of the engine? I'm "weighing" a couple of engine options for my ride. Weight vs. Horsepower required.
Thanks, Wes

The shipping weight was listed as 900 lbs.  That included the crate, engine stand, computer, and wiring harnesses.  Just guessing, I would think all of that was at least 75lbs.

I still can't believe it is mine and sitting in my garage.  :droolingbounce:  :faint:  :woohoo: :faint:

Arghhh!!!   I knew I was going to have to do some adjustments to the drivers side motor mount bracket to get this motor in my car.  But, because I have an original Hemi K member, it is going to be even more work than what I expected from my research on the web.

I found this page describing a install of KB Hemi in a 71, but it looks like he is using the Schumacher mounts in a regular V8 K member.
http://www.bkauto.net/1971%20HEMICUDA.htm
He had some headaches but not too bad.

The problem I am facing is that the motor mount for the original Hemi sweeps forward and directly interferes with the external oil pump.  At this point, I need to take some measurements and see if I can fab a new mount.  :dunno:  :hyper:

HemiDog,

That is awesome! and fuel injected too!  I'll have 3 Mopars fuel injected whem I'm finished.  It's the only way to fly now.

I wanted to mention that you may want to run a pre-oiler or accusump to prime the oil pump.  I ran that oil pickup and pump on my race car and you'll see it sucking air after sitting for a couple of weeks or months. Sometimes you'll have to pull the oil-pump driveshaft to prime it by hand just to get pressure.  You'll see what I mean after you start it up and don't see any oil pressure. Very BAD....
