Crush Can Puller?
« on: June 24, 2007 - 12:26:40 PM »
Hi I'm a pretty young guy (17) and I have to pull the crush can off my steering column to get to the ignition, being the genius i am I used a screwdriver to try and pry it.  This didn't work to well, so I read up and now I need the puller.  Anyone know where i can get one? Thanks, Sam

You can borrow steering wheel pullers from many of the national parts stores,( Auto Zone, Advance) but you may have to adapt some longer bolts to reach into the depths of the crush can.

You need a puller, NO doubt. I think they put crazy glue on them from the factory.  :stomp: I was lucky enough to borrow one from a guy at work that did the deal for me. I just remember a loud pop when it finally gave up the ghost.  :scared: The good news is, after you remove it that first time, anytime after that is a breeze, no puller needed.  :grinyes:

I took an old puller and cut the ends off of it for the crush cans.  It fits in there nice and makes quick work of the job

I ended up custom making a puller when things were slow at work.

I used my harmonic balancer puller.  I think I paid 12 bucks for it and it pulls harmonic balancers as well as the crush can.

Lol. That sure wasn't my experience. I recently pulled mine for the 2nd time and that frickin thing was on there so tight that I still got the loud pop that made me think I had snapped something. :-)

3/8 - 16NC. My Rimblow is inside now for winter storage so there was easy access to them. I even ran that tap into the holes to be sure. Here's a pic of my homemade puller.

It can be done two ways
1] use or buy a small enough puller to get inside the can
2] use any puller but you need to get 7" long bolts & either a longer threaded rod to reach or a spacer that will slip over the threaded bolt  .
JayBee is right the bolts are 3/8 coarse thread

I doubt it.  Whatever they used at the factory was like cement.   :o  You need to have some type of puller. Believe me, you will hear a loud pop when it comes off too.   :22yikes:

Grec, I'm surprised you had problems pulling the crush can a second time. After I take the 3/4" nut off, I put the steering wheel back on the crush can with those 3 nuts...And pull. It works for me anyway.
