Uh-oh
« on: June 26, 2007 - 07:48:00 AM »
So I was on the way home from a car show on sunday, following my relative's 69 RR.  He let er go a little bit at one intersection, so I did the same.  I didnt push the pedal to the floor, but it was a pretty good acceleration.

From 1st to 2nd its usually a good, firm shift.  2nd to 3rd has always been pretty soft.  Well, this time, it was neither.  When it was just going to shift to 3rd, the whole car started jerking.  Kind of lurching real hard.  I let off immediately, and slowly applied gas again.  It shifted into third sort of soft like normal.  It has never done that before.  Scared the crap out of me.  When I got home, I checked the fluid, and it was good.

So, is the tranny going?  (I figured it will need a rebuild this winter anyways.)

Torque converter?  Sorry, I dont know anything about autos, much less manuals.

Gimme a tractor to fix, that I can do.   :grinyes:   :roflsmiley:

Thanks.   :-[

How does it do in reverse, does it "bump" in right away?

Yep, it goes into reverse just fine, I think.  I didnt notice anything not normal.  I could check it again.  Does it have to be warm?

Maybe a fuel problem?  :clueless:  Not enough getting to the engine?  :dunno:

It was definitely tranny related.  The engine was the same RPM, I could feel it in the tranny, know what I mean?   Hard to explain.  :clueless:

Burnt or slipping bands? Does the car sound like it should be going faster than it is/feels?
My 'Cuda (Dads) was like that. Put my foot down and it took about 3 years to actually get anywhere.

Nope, no problem there Carl.  RPM throught all the gears seems normal.  Nothing smells funny, takes off great, can leave one patch of black on the right side

Even chirps in second when I take off HARD.  Its just shifting to third has always seemed weak.  Once in third, no problem cruising.

Next time I take it out, I'll have to check the reverse thing like Terry said, and see what happens from there.

Thanks guys.   :2thumbs:

Do the 4 speed mod.  Then you can shift into third whenever you want.  :grinyes:

How does it go into reverse cold? After it goes in, does the car back up normally? (again cold)

Tell you the truth I havent tried yet.  I normally drive it once a week.  I did push it out of the shed this afternoon to paint my truck roof.  When I drive it back in I can check reverse.   :2thumbs:

It "Clunked" in R just fine, backed up fine.  This is when it is cold though.  I pulled it in the shed no problem.  I'll have to do it when it is warm, probably this weekend.   :-[

I know there is no miracle cure for mechanical issues but I've had some luck with some of the
shift improver additives....Lucas Oil Tran. product is where I would start.
