jumped from + batt to bal got 12 but still got no strup tried dist in 3-4 locations still no good. Tried emailing you during the week but it bounced back. Can you email your ph # so I can confirm some things? My email is michael@maturehealth.com

Mike,

  Here's a test to see if your ignition switch is working. Unplug the connector going to the ignition module. Turn the key to the "on" position, and see what voltages you measure on the "+" side of the coil, and on one of the pins of the ignition module connector, you should have 12 volts.

I know this is something simple, and after going through it I will have a wealth of knowlewdge on the subject but some of the variables are changing (voltage at bal res) javascript:void(0);

with the dist out 180* you will not nessisarily get a backfire out of the carb but it will not be happy

Mike, Use your timing tight, if you can get a signal , to check the dist. position like I said the motor doesn't have to be running.

Now another problem!
I swapped out a bad balast resistor since I last posted.
Looks like that may have been one of many problems.
Here is the latest specs:
battery 12.26 V

bal. resistor 10.18 on battery side at rest

bal resistor on eng side 8.18 at rest
6.2-6.4 while cranking "run"

Spark off of coil so it looked liked everything was ok so I figure lets try and start it!
I made all of my connections and when I connected my quick-disconnect to neg side of battery I got a huge poip (sounded like a engine back fire-really loud even broght my wife out!)
disconnected batt. and saw plume of smoke near pass side firewall.
I then realized I left the key in the run pos. whiel I was making connections. What did I ruin! At first I thought I blew out the ECU (maybe I did). Then I considered starter or similar (bottom of engine is where I saw smoke). Want to ask you guys before I proceed and burn down the garage!

Since you weren't trying to crank the engine at the time, all that happened was you applied voltage to the ballast resistor, which in turn fed the coil. I don't know what the noise was you heard, but if you didn't blow out the fusable linkage(doubtful), then I would try to connect the battery again. The fuseable linkage comes of the starter relay on the driver's side inner wheel well. It smokes a TON. Don't ask me how I know.  :misbehaving:

Yes I know, had that with previous bal resist. But this was like a big block engine backfire.Smoke came from what appeared liek bottom of engine on pass side near ECU.
And bal was not even hot afetr the smoke cleared, which is why I am thinking it i snot it. A buddy told m eaI may have pinched a wire when installing Hemi and it is now grounding off and teh reason for my problems. My thought now is to go through the entire elec sysytem both in eng bay and and under dash. I was just hoping I could avoid this but it looks enevitable. Please add you thoughts

My first place to start with hunting down the entire system was the fusible link.
Could I have blown something on the fuse block as well?

Now that I think of this more, I guess it's possible you gave the starter solenoid a jolt with connecting the battery with the key on. I still say try again with the key off this time   :poopoke: . If your starter doesn't turn, then you know what blew. I know you are scared now, but I don't think this is going to be tough to figure out.

I am thinking with the large pop and smoke it is likely.
