Hello all,

I just bought my first E-body -- a 1973 Barracuda.  I haven't taken any pictures of it yet, but its pictures are still up on Ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=015&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=250127585141&rd=1,1

So, I wanted to get something I could play with and fix up to exactly how I wanted.  So, I didn't want a rare car I'd feel guilty about messing with or something I'd worry if it was no longer stock.  This car is perfect for that.

As far as I've been able to tell so far, this car must have been through several owners, and each one has put their own take on it.  It was originally a green 318 car, with green interior, and a vinyl top.  The top was taken off, and at some point painted blue.  Then, the current red paint job -- who ever did that was much more thorough than the blue painter.  They also put in an all new red accent interior, but that's showing some age now.

Its also been through some engines.  The current is a 1972 400 -- I assume from a Charger.  The engine wasn't cleaned up much before it went in, but its got a brand new carb and exhaust on it

I guess the good news is, that going through all of those owners, its probably never just sat and rotted.  Its a driver -- Changed the belts on it, and drove it every day this week -- no problems so far.

I was thinking about swapping out the engine, maybe going for a 440, since there were never any 400's in any of these.  But after reading up some, it looks like the 400 is in the same family as the 383 and 440 anyway, maybe I'll just keep it.  Anybody got thoughts on that?  I read somewhere those are thought of as "smog" motors, but all of the smog stuff on this engine is gone anyway, so is there any good reason I shouldn't keep it?

This is a great site with lots of good materials -- I look forward to being a part of it.

Later,
Covert

Welcome Covert!!!

Cool car you got there.  The 400 isn't a bad engine at all but if your sticking with a big block and you want to build up an engine for your car you might as well make it a 440. That way you can build the engine and drive the car at the same time. Your cars color is the same as my white '74 had from the factory. Same stripe too  :2thumbs:

By the way, if you need anymore 400s I have a couple of extras laying around here somewhere  :misbehaving:

Welcome, covert.  You're right up the road from me.  I had dinner at Holy Smokes in Garner with a friend yesterday.

Enjoy the site.

Welcome to the site and a great starting point for making the Barracuda for your taste. The 400 is a pretty good engine so drive it and enjoy.

Good idea on the 440 -- You're right, I might as well keep the 400 in there as a driver, then when I'm ready to do something different, work on a 440 on the side.  Less downtime means more time to drive it around

Challenger HK -- Where are the places around Raleigh and nearby that you use for your car?  I hope to do a lot of stuff my self, but its it would be great to know who is good to go to for the stuff I don't feel like I can handle.  Especially body and paint -- any places you would suggest for that?

Hey, covert, can't really give you much of an answer yet.  I've only been here (Fayetteville area) less than two years, and I'm still looking for a body man, although I do finally have a lead.

Hey Covert,
Welcome to the site!!  Nice find and at a very decent price!!  :2thumbs: You could get a Schumacher (I know I spelled it wrong) kit for that 400 and make a stroker. You'll end up with about 451 cubic inches and plenty of power. A 440 is also a great choice. I am your border neighbor as I live in Virginia about 25 miles from the Carolina line. This is the best site dedicated to Cuda's and Challengers bar none. You'll find tons of helpful info and lots of friendly folks to boot!! Welcome and keep us posted on the car's progress!!
