Probably the easiest way is to have someone burn the VHS to a DVD.  If you don't know anyone who can do this, google it, it will cost about 10 to 15 bucks.  Then with software you can cut the DVD up into smaller files on your PC.

There might be some free software out there if you search.  I have a friend who uses this and he likes it.

I picked up a piece of hardware for $30 at CompUSA about a year ago that lets me connect my VHS (or just about any analog source) to my laptop and record the results as an mpeg file.  I don't recall the brand name, but let me know if you're interested and I'll try to find it (stuff is still being unpacked from my move).

Happy to be able to help the transman instead of the other way around for a change

Did a quick web search.  The brand name was Pinnacle, a company that specializes in computer video stuff.  They used to make something called a Dazzle (may still be out there, I don't know) that was a lot more expensive than what I got.  I couldn't find any sign of what I have, but as I recall there were about half a dozen similar products at the time, all made to transfer analog video to mpegs.  If you head to a Circuit City or a CompUSA and tell them what you want to do, I'm sure they can set you up with something.

If all you want to do is capture the video, or if all the edits you want to make are limited to starting and stopping the recorder at the right times, this would be all you would need.  If you want to make more elaborate edits, add titles or play with sound (like, say, a voice-over) then you'd need some editing software as well.  The only editing software I have experience with is the Avid system (high end, thousands of dollars), but if you can wait until after Carlisle (I'm heading out tonight for Virginia) I'd be happy to do a little more research and see what's out there, if that's the kind of thing you need.

Thanks CHK all I need is something simple to cut a little section out of a video after it has been converted to a DVD format and then put it on the web some where. Where is a good FREE site on the web to host it?

I'm still looking into that one myself.  All three of my e-mail account providers have recently dumped free web hosting, so I need to find a place to put things like that.

Youtube seems to be a popular site...seems most of the videos posted here use them.
There seem to be a myriad of product & prices for video capture cards http://www.nextag.com/video-capture-card/search-html
My Sony digital 8mm will convert any analog signal sent through it.
My Windows came with a video editor that lets you make clips/convert to different file types.

That looks very close to what I have, Terry.  Very simple operation, as the blurb says. Click record on the interface, press play on the VCR and you're right to roll.  FYI, the first time I installed the software it wouldn't work.  I backed it all out, re-installed it and it was fine. Go figure.
