AAR VS. Grand National
« on: July 06, 2007 - 05:41:45 PM »
a friend of mine recently reminded me of our last night of drag racing, 20 years ago (we're old dogs now)....

...I had several nice MOPARS in my possession thru the years, but this Tor Red AAR was one of the best runners ever....a friend of mine had just purchased an 87 Buick Grand National (a very impressive car for 1987)....we rode around one night destroying everything on the streets with the black Buick...after a burger and Coke we decided to make the 20 mile trip to my house and run it against some old MOPAR Muscle I had in my garage, just to see how they compared....he was afraid of my Daytona, so I got my AAR out of the garage and followed him to a local stretch of deserted 4 lane highway....my little AAR CUDA was a numbers matching, bone stock, automatic, 42K mile original car, but it always ran extra good...

...first pass, we line up, dead stop, and he yelled go....we did, and the Buick pulled me by about 1/2 a fender by the time we hit the agreed finish line....I was impressed the old CUDA stayed with the new modern muscle of 1987

...second pass, we line up and do a rolling start at about 5mph......the SIX BBL was instantly kicking a$$ on the Grand National....by the time we hit the finish line, the CUDA was in the lead by a full fender and part of the door.....I was elated....we decided to call it a night since we both had a victory, but, we were starting to leave the area and waving when he nailed the Buick one more time and since we were rolling about 20mph, the AAR really showed it's strength this time taking him by well over a car length before letting out of the throttle.....the old AAR CUDA totally dusted the black Buick...

....20 years later he still remembers his defeat by one of Mother MOPARS best like it was last night, I do to :roflsmiley:

Great story. Sounds like a fun night. Those Grand Nationals are pretty bad machines.

Great story and the Grand nationals were always known to be bad a$$ machines. Just goes to show that the old Mopar muscle of the early 70's were nothing to mess with.

I had a chance to drive one of those Grand Nationals back in the day and I have to say they were fast.  It took a second for the turbo to spool up but the midrange was scarey fast kinda like a stock HEMI.  Still, I like cars with a quick 60ft time  :2thumbs:
