In 1970, what did the R/T package consist of?
« on: July 07, 2007 - 07:18:51 AM »
I know it came with a big block, but what other differences were there with the R/T package vs. a base Challenger with say a 340?

i believe that the 340 was also an R/T option, i think that mostly it had to do with the heavy duty suspension.  :feedback:

lots of answers to this, but basically you got a faster, better handling package that looked a little different(better) than the base line cars....it included upgrades to the suspension, interior, usually a different hood, or choice of hoods, paint and stripe packages that weren't available on base cars....wheels and tires were also upgraded for the performance cars.....they were all dressed up and ready for racing

According to the Dealership Data Book at the following link, the 340 was not an option with the R/T package.

A 340 powered car could not be had as a R/T (JS23...,JS27...), although virtually all of the parts of a R/T package could be had on the 340 car... BUT the car was not coded as a R/T (JS...).   The Shaker was available on base Challengers (at least in 1971 which I researched when I had a 1971 Challenger R/T Shaker car).

You could only get a 340 r/t in 1971. 383 was standard in 1970. I have seen a 1971 340 4-speed triple black 71 r/t stripe delete with the power bulge hood.

I remember test driving a no salt Texas '71 340 R/T convertible in about 1976.

Didn't buy it 'cuz the trunk was bottom was already rusted out   :scared:

No wonder that when they are 30+ years old they have rust issues.

What would you call the A66 (CHALLENGER 340 PERFORMANCE PACKAGE) code then?

according to the Dealership Data Book, that package was not available on the R/T or SE models.

Never said it did.  :clueless:
OK last edit, my understanding of Daytona's post was there was never any of the options on the base car that the A66 obviously is, a base Challenger with all the R/T options except badges and a big block.
