New "STEEL" shaker hood repo..

I saw it new at Carlisle on Friday. The guy had two out for display only. It was an "exact" steel repo good with the cut out, welded brace and steel trim ring.

BRAND new. for.. drum roll..........................

..a grand. He said they will be selling production by Fall 2007. Man when I saw that.. I will be buyingt one for a spare.. no doubt. It also had the crumple zone like the org 71's. I was there, it was REALLY nice too. Price kinda shocked me too.

Gene Gregory (Ben's competition) sells to Six Pack performance who vends Gene's parts

Other than that, the reports I recieved showed that Niether of them showed up with a complete new reproduction hood to sell or display.

The company who did have one was AMD (Auto Metal Direct in Georgia) one of the THREE different vendors who claim to be working on a complete hood. To the best of my knowledge they are the only company so far to produce a prototype at Carlisle.

*Also, for those not in the loop, this is for the bare hood only (not the other parts under the hood which cost roughly $2,500.00 extra). The new prototype hood displayed at Carlisle was the 71 only style with the crush ribs in the sides, if you need a correct 70 version it is not planned by any of them to my knowledge. Also keep in mind that in terms of correctness the word "Exact" gets tossed around WAY too casually these days when it comes to reproduction parts, before anyone buys into that you need to compare the new hoods to the real thing. While these new reproduction hoods will be nice I'm sure, and conveinient for those who don't want to do any conversion work, don't count on them being "Exact" because they will not be. Using an original flat hood and one of our kits will STILL get you closer to factory than anything else out there, including these new hoods. 100% gauranteed.

As far as I'm aware they are "exact" repros but as we all know "Exact repros" is thrown out there a lot and most turn out to be "exact opposites" lol. It sounds good for those looking for a cheap alternative and/or possibly an easier way to go, I just hope who ever is making them does it properly for the good of the hobby. I am still continuing to keep an eye out for a nice 71 flat hood but if these hood turn out to be "As good as they say" I'll probably end up buying one after hearing some more in depth reviews.

I still think finding an original flat hood is the way to go, they're the best out there being original and from I've heard, with the trim rings on your parts, they're exact and they fit perfectly even on the original shakerhoods where-as others don't. Like I said, one eye is curiously on these new hoods and the other on an original flat hood, if I find one I'll definitely flick you through an email for one of your 3 piece kits. I'm not after cheap, just the best.

I think the only difference apart from 71-74 hoods having the "Barracuda" emblem drivers front is they have crumple zone braces in them where as the 70s didn't. I don't think there is any other difference apart from part #s.

Flat hoods are getting pretty spendy these days and finding one w/o a ton of bondo and rust is even harder.

then...finding a competent body shop to make the conversion maybe almost as tough.

If the repops are good, and $1k or less, I'll put my flat hood in storage and pop for a repop.

Right, but there were some late 1970 hoods that did have the crumple zones.

Don't know how accurate this is, but I was looking at a ralley hood, and asked the guy what year it was. He pointed to the underneath, and said that the 70 has 1 crumple zone crease, while the 71 has 2 creases. The one he had was a 71.
