Which Ignition should I get?
« on: July 10, 2007 - 05:33:11 PM »
Ok, so while I may be wiring my whole Cuda over, I may as well do the igition.  I had planned to do it at the motor swap (360 to a 440) but I think I can do it now.

Which ignition should I get?

Well my 2cents. I'd go with a 6AL (6A w/rev limiter) box, wires i'm not sure who prefers what for fit on a big block. Distributor I'd stick with stock, hotter coil (MSD Blaster II, the black one is vibration resistant and can be mounted to the engine with no problems. Make note of a coil you buy if it can be mounted on the engine, or it must be on the firewall).

6AL and Blaster2.

:iagree: I have the MSD 6A, but I'm always wishing I had the 6AL for the rev limiter.

I've run the stock Mopar with chrome box, an MSD 6al, MSD Digital 6, and Jacobs Ultra. I've got to say, the feel, power, e.t. and mph numbers weren't all that different between them all.  The 6al is nice because of the rev limit feature, but I never came up against it so it was kind of useless to me. The Digital 6 is nice because ofhte start retarnd, rpm retard, rev limiter, adn ability to hook it to other systems like nitrous controls or trans brakes, otherwise, it is no better or worse than the others.

What do you want to do with your car? Unless you have future plans that require any of the special features of the MSD systems, you can keep it simple with a chrome box and oem distributor.

Nothing too big....just switch out my 360 for the 440 I've got (hopinh to build it to make around 450+hp) and a new trani (3 speed to start, then a 4 or 5 speed sometime down the road).  Other than that, just new auto-meter gauges, and some other mall stuff, but not planning to run NOS or anything like that on the motor.....just too much $$$

Thanks for the advice....to tell you the truth, I'm not stuck on MSD (in fact, my Auto-Meter tach says not to be used with MSD), I just haven't heard of other systems being used as much as MSD.

Here's what I was thinking of getting:

Box
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=006&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=160134853035&rd=1&rd=1

Coil:

If anyone can show me the equvilant in other brands, I'll be happy to look at them.  I looked up a few from Crane & Jacobs like Chryco suggested, but I'm having a hard time telling which one to get.

Summit has a digital ignition that looks pretty good.....the rev limiter goes from 4k to 12k on a dial, no chips....
