The car is safe but all the impact and force was drawn to where the driver and occupants sit. That's why these days they make them crumple. Not because they're plastic, because that's just the way they're are designed to lessen the blow and force in the compartment area. IMO, the car was either hit hard from behind and "nudged" into the car in front or, it clipped a barrier/wall and spun itself around clockwise into the opposite barrier/wall which is where the major rear impact took place.
